The Maintenance Worker III (Operator / Teamster) is responsible for performing advanced, skilled and technical work in the construction, repair, and maintenance of City streets and alleys, including snow and ice control operations. This Operator coordinates projects, emphasizes heavy equipment operation, provides field leadership, and mentors junior staff. This position works under the general supervision of the Street Division Superintendent and Street Division Manager.
Serves as a lead worker by providing daily guidance, technical direction, and on-the-job training to staff, ensuring safe and efficient work practices. May act as the Street Foreman in their absence.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
Work is performed in an office and outdoor environment. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is exposed to cold, heat, snow, ice, wind, and rain. Employees are provided personal protective equipment and are required to follow standard operating guidelines and safety procedures to prevent exposure to hazards.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand, walk, sit, crawl, bend, twist, kneel, reach, grasp, pick, pinch, push, pull, ride, climb and perform similar body movements. Must have the ability to perform heavy physical work and to frequently lift and carry up to 100 pounds at a time; the possession of hand/eye coordination sufficient to operate Street maintenance equipment, hand tools, and a motor vehicle; the ability to talk and hear in person or by telephone or two-way radio; and the ability to see and read dials, instructions and reports.
EXPECTED HOURS OF WORK
The work week is Sunday through Saturday. Work is typically performed during a 40-hour work schedule, Monday through Friday. Schedules involve mandatory shift work to include nights, overtime, weekends and holidays. This position is non-exempt and eligible for overtime, which must be approved by their supervisor prior to working. Employees are expected to report to work on time, fully prepared for scheduled workdays.
TRAVEL
Travel is primarily local during the business day. Occasional travel may be required to attend off-site training and educational opportunities.
- Provides field level leadership and clear direction to Maintenance Worker I and II staff, mentors peers, trains new employees in safe equipment operation and best practices and serves as the primary point of communication between the crew and management during daily operations.
- Operates a wide variety of heavy equipment with advanced skill to maintain, repair, and construct streets, including performing snow and ice control, while ensuring safety, equipment upkeep, and efficient work.
- Leads and participates in jobsite safety meetings, including daily briefings and toolbox talks, and documents all safety discussions using the site safety checklist to reinforce safe work practices and maintain hazard awareness.
- Assists with quality control inspections of pavement and maintenance projects to ensure workmanship meets established standards.
- Completes required documentation, including work orders, daily reports, and material tracking, with accuracy and accountability.
- Responds to service calls and emergency repair requirements with a focus on safe, efficient and effective resolution.
- Supports long-term infrastructure planning by assisting with field condition inspections, documenting findings, and updating asset management system records to ensure accurate data for maintenance scheduling and capital infrastructure investment planning.
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Minimum of five (5) years of experience in street maintenance and heavy equipment operation, including at least two (2) years in a lead or advanced role.
- Possession of a valid Montana Class A Commercial Drivers (CDL) license with Air Brake and Tanker endorsements or the ability to obtain one within 6 months of employment.
- Must meet Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) Clearinghouse requirements.
- Pavement Inspection Certification Modules 5, 6, and 7. within 6 months of employment
- As of January 6, 2020, employers of CDL drivers must query the Clearinghouse to verify that a current or prospective driver is not prohibited from operating Commercial Motor Vehicles or performing other safety sensitive functions.
