Job Title: Firefighter

Department: Fire Department

Reports To: Captain

Job Summary:

Under the direction of the Captain/Engineer, responds to alarms and other emergency calls to protect life and property. Operates fire fighting and ambulance equipment. Participates in fire prevention programs, including public education and fire inspections. Responsible for ambulance and rescue runs, station maintenance, and training activities. Work varies and requires individual judgement within prescribed standards and procedures.

Job Duties and Responsibilities:

A.
Under the direction of the Captain/Engineer, responds to alarms and other emergency calls to protect life and property. Operates fire fighting and ambulance equipment. Participates in fire prevention programs, including public education and fire inspections. Responsible for ambulance and rescue runs, station maintenance, and training activities. Work varies and requires individual judgement within prescribed standards and procedures.

1. Responds to alarms and assists in the suppression of fires, including rescue, entry, ventilation, and salvage work.

2. Operates equipment as required and otherwise assists in the suppression of fires and in the protection of life and property.

3. Operates defibrillators and administers medical aid.

4. After fire has been extinguished, performs cleanup and overhaul work, and ensures equipment is ready for the next alarm.

5. Assists in maintaining fire apparatus, equipment, fire station, and grounds.

6. Responds to emergency calls.

7. Participates in continuing training and instruction programs by individual study of technical matter and attendance at scheduled drills and classes relating to firefighting techniques and emergency medical treatment.

8. Responds to major alarms while off duty.

9. Performs home and building surveys.

10. Performs hydrant inspections and tests.

11. Conducts station tours.

12. Completes necessary documents for fire and EMS response.

13. Occasionally works with information restricted to specific persons for a limited time.

14. Occasionally handles small amounts of funds.

15. Contact with the public and fellow employees is substantial in performance of duties.

16. Performs other duties as assigned or required.

Physical Demands:

Work is strenuous and involves lifting, carrying, pulling, pushing, climbing, stooping, prolonged standing, kneeling, crouching, reaching, handling, talking, listening, and seeing.

Qualifications:

A. Thorough knowledge of the operation and maintenance of equipment involved in the department operations.

B. Thorough knowledge of principles of fire science, EMS, and department operations.

C. Ability to read gauges and recording devices.

D. Ability to use a variety of hand tools.

E. Ability to follow written and oral instructions.

F. Ability to read and understand technical manuals.

G. Ability to effectively communicate with co-workers, supervisors, and the general public.

H. Ability to exercise independent judgement.

Special Requirements:

Must possess a valid Kansas driver’s license. Mechanical experience is desirable. Must become EMT and FF1 certified within 18 months of employment, or as soon as applicable.

Working Conditions:

Work is inside and outside. Involves contact with water, exposure to heat, noise, noxious odors, hazardous chemicals, fumes, gases, vapors, mists, liquids, exposure to weather and risk of bodily harm. Subject to call back, second alarms, standby, and involves rotating shift work.
