What are the responsibilities and job description for the Engineering Inspector 1 position at City of Grand Prairie?
The purpose of this position is to perform daily inspections of public and private construction for the City to ensure accurate and timely installation. This is accomplished by ensuring all specifications and requirements have been met; reviewing plans and specifications; and coordinating activities between the contractor, other City departments, and other agencies. Other duties include serving as a primary source of contact between the City and the contractor, citizens, and other agencies; maintaining daily reports; and interacting with other City employees and citizens.
- Inspects workmanship, materials, and construction of private development and public works infrastructure including excavation, paving, roadways, bridges, drainage, water, sewer, and utility work to ensure compliance with all plans and specifications, and no damage to adjacent properties has occurred. Assures that specifications for street and utilities material testing requirements are met; and obtain water samples for quality in accordance with the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) requirements; monitors traffic control devices, Storm Water Pollution Prevention Plans (SWPPP), and Trench Safety Systems; enforce regulations of Confined Space Entry and Rescue.
- Performs plan review and record keeping by reviewing plans and specifications with the Supervisor; attending pre-bid and pre-construction meetings; obtaining quantities and estimates for City funded projects; reviews lab reports, water and core samples for accuracy and to ensures conformation with existing codes, standards and specifications and in accordance with TCEQ and the EPA requirements; and maintaining daily reports of work performed on the job and other events related to the projects.

- Work requires knowledge necessary to understand basic operational, technical, or office processes. Level of knowledge equivalent to four years of high school or equivalency.
- Minimum of two years inspections of public and private construction including reviewing plans and specifications.
- Valid Texas Class C Driver's License.
- Intermediate - Ability to read papers, periodicals, journals, manuals, dictionaries, thesauruses, and encyclopedias. Ordinarily, such education is obtained in high school up to college. However, it may be obtained from experience and self-study.
- Intermediate - Ability to deal with system of real numbers; practical application of fractions, percentages, ratios/proportions and measurement. Ordinarily, such education is obtained in high school up to college. However, it may be obtained from experience and self-study.
- Intermediate - Ability to write reports, prepare business letters, expositions, and summaries with proper format, punctuation, spelling, and grammar, using all parts of speech. Ordinarily, such education is obtained in high school up to college. However, it may be obtained from experience and self-study.
