What are the responsibilities and job description for the Facility Maintenance Technician - Full Time position at City of Goose Creek?
Hours: Thursday - Monday, 10 AM - 6 PM
Essential Responsibilities:
- Performs routine maintenance and light repairs on buildings, facilities, and park structures, including:
o Minor plumbing (e.g., unclogging drains, fixing faucets, replacing hardware)
o Minor electrical work (e.g., replacing light bulbs, outlets, finding breakers)
o Minor carpentry and painting
- Conducts regular inspections of facilities and equipment, identifying and reporting issues needing repair or replacement into a work order system.
- Supports event logistics by setting up and breaking down tables, chairs, equipment, and signage for recreational programs and special events.
- Operates small machinery and tools safely, including floor buffers, blowers, and basic power tools.
- Supports custodial staff in maintaining cleanliness of facilities by performing custodial duties including:
o Mopping, dusting, and cleaning floors.
o Vacuuming carpeted areas.
o Cleaning restrooms and breakroom; replenish supplies.
o Dusting furniture including but not limited to desks, cubicles, and blinds.
o Cleaning baseboards.
o Cleaning glass and windows.
o Removing trash from buildings.
o Picks up litter and blows/sweeps parking lots, walkways, entry areas, and breezeway.
- Responds to work orders and service requests in a timely and professional manner.
- Assists in maintaining cleaning supply inventory
- Assists with seasonal tasks, such as weatherproofing, snow removal, or summer field prep (e.g. treating for ants/wasps)
- Operates city vehicles and transports equipment safely.
- Adheres to all safety protocols and city policies.
- Provides courteous assistance to staff, participants, and the public when needed.
- Performs other duties as assigned
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
- High School Diploma or equivalent.
- One-year experience performing custodial and light maintenance work, or related field.
- Valid South Carolina Driver's License.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
- Knowledge of cleaning and custodial practices and general repairs and maintenance. Knowledge of safety practices involved in building and custodial work and general repairs and maintenance.
- Skill in the operation of equipment and machines used in cleaning and building maintenance.
- Skill in basic math and reading.
- Ability to climb ladders.
- Ability to use hand tools, including shovel, rake, and pitchfork.
- Ability to perform heavy lifting.
- Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
- Ability to work under pressure in a fast-paced environment.
- Ability to multi-task.
- Ability to remain flexible and adjust to priority requests as needed.
- Ability to follow verbal and written instructions, complete documentation, and prioritize tasks.
- Strong interpersonal skills; able to work independently and as part of a team
- Must be willing to work some evenings and weekends based on department needs
- Knowledge of department policies and procedures.
Work Environment
Work is typically performed inside assigned building and outdoor facilities. Frequent exposure to unpleasant environmental conditions and/or hazards. Majority of work performed with exposure to risk. Daily exposure to respiratory and chemical hazards. Seasonal exposure to extreme temperature and wetness and/or humidity with some outside work. Employee may be exposed to dust, dirt, grease, contagious or infectious diseases, irritating chemicals, and cold or inclement weather.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Continuously requires vision, foot controls, balancing, hearing, and twisting. Frequently requires standing, walking, lifting, carrying, handling, kneeling, pushing/pulling, bending, and talking. Medium strength demands include exerting up to 10 pounds constantly, 10-25 pounds frequently, and 20-50 pounds occasionally.
MENTAL DEMANDS
Occasionally requires time pressures and frequent change of tasks.
