The primary function of this position is to perform installation, maintenance, modification and repair of industrial electrical systems involving process controlled, industrial equipment. This is a journey-level industrial electrician position involving voltages up to 480 VAC. The position requires graduation from an electrician training and apprenticeship program. Much of the work is performed on or around large medium-voltage equipment such as pumps, blowers, fans, transformers and other equipment. Shift work, weekends, holidays, standby duty, and call-back duty may be required.

The ideal candidate is a safety-focused, highly skilled Industrial Control Electrician with experience maintaining, troubleshooting, and repairing electrical power distribution, motor control, instrumentation, and automated control systems within a water and wastewater utility environment. The candidate should possess strong technical knowledge, excellent troubleshooting skills, and a commitment to reliability, safety, and regulatory compliance.

  • Performs installation, maintenance, and repair of medium voltage equipment, booster stations, motors, and related control equipment. 
  • Designs and plans layouts for energy management systems, equipment, electrical fixtures, and control equipment. 
  • Performs installation, maintenance, repair and trouble-shooting of low-voltage 3-phase equipment, switch gear and other electrical systems and components. 
  • Locates, plans, and carries out repair of system and component failures.
  • Prepares installation and repair cost estimates; Orders and purchases required supplies and materials; 
  • Troubleshoots/maintains equipment that is Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC) controlled; 
  • Prepares and maintains work records, including work orders, maintenance and repair logs, vehicle inspection forms, daily work logs, compliance reports and other documentation. 
  • Inspects, tests, and evaluates incoming supplies, materials and equipment; monitors inventory levels of spare equipment; orders and purchases required supplies and materials. 
  • Performs general cleaning/maintenance tasks necessary to keep vehicles, equipment, and tools in operable condition, which may include inspecting equipment, replacing parts, washing/cleaning equipment, cleaning shop/work areas; monitors equipment operations to maintain efficiency and safety.
  • Formal Education/Knowledge:  Work requires knowledge of a specific vocational, administrative, or technical nature that may be obtained with a two year associate’s degree, diploma or equivalent from a college, technical, business, vocational, or correspondence school. Appropriate certification may be awarded upon satisfactory completion of advanced study or training.
  • Experience:    Minimum two years of experience in a related field.
  • Certifications and Other Requirements:  Valid Driver’s License
  • Reading:   Advanced - Ability to read literature, books, reviews, scientific or technical journals, abstracts, financial reports, and/or legal documents. Ordinarily, such education is obtained in at the college level or above. However, it may be obtained from experience and self-study.
  • Math:   Intermediate - Ability to deal with a system of real numbers; and practical application of fractions, percentages, ratios/proportions and measurement. Ordinarily, such education is obtained in high school up to college. However, it may be obtained from experience and self-study.
  • Writing:   Intermediate - Ability to write reports, prepare business letters, expositions, and summaries with proper format, punctuation, spelling, and grammar, using all parts of speech. Ordinarily, such education is obtained in high school up to college. However, it may be obtained from experience and self-study.
  • Managerial:  Semi-complex – Work requires the occasional direction of helpers, assistants, seasonal employees, interns, or temporary employees.
  • Policy/Decision Making:  Significant - The employee normally performs the job by following established standard operating procedures and/or policies.   There is a choice of the appropriate procedure or policy to apply to duties.  More complex work as well as decisions with more significant impacts may be reviewed prior to being finalized.  
  • Technical Skills:  Broad Application - Work requires advanced skills and knowledge in approaches and systems, which affect the design and implementation of programs, solutions for complex issues, and/or processes.   Independent judgment and decision-making abilities may be necessary to apply technical skills effectively.
  • Interpersonal/Human Relations Skills:  Moderate - In addition to the sharing of information, interactions at this level may also include providing advice to others outside direct reporting relationships on specific problems or general policies/procedures.  In many of the interactions, contacts may require the consideration of different points of view to reach agreement.  Elements of persuasion may be necessary to gain cooperation and acceptance of ideas.

Within Three (3) Months

  1. Become familiar with City, Department, Division policies, safety procedures, and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
  2. Become familiar with the location, function, and critical electrical systems of all Water and Wastewater Treatment facilities, lift stations, wells, reservoirs, and booster stations.
  3. Become proficient in the use of GoCanvas, Lucity, and other computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS) used for work order tracking, inspections, and documentation.
  4. Review and become familiar with current NFPA 70 (NEC), NFPA 70E (Electrical Safety in the Workplace), NFPA 70B (Electrical Equipment Maintenance), OSHA regulations, Lockout/Tagout procedures, and City electrical safety requirements.
  5. Review existing electrical maintenance procedures, arc flash documentation, and labeling programs; provide recommendations for improvements.
  6. Verify BradyLink electrical labeling database accuracy and update panel, MCC, VFD, and control equipment labels as directed.
  7. Demonstrate the ability to safely perform electrical troubleshooting, testing, and maintenance under supervision.

Within Six (6) Months

  1. Successfully participate in the on-call/standby rotation and respond to emergency electrical issues as required.
  2. Independently complete and document a minimum of five (5) corrective or preventive maintenance work orders utilizing Lucity.
  3. Perform scheduled preventive maintenance inspections on MCCs, VFDs, control panels, generators, transfer switches, and related electrical equipment at a minimum of ten facilities in accordance with NFPA 70B and departmental maintenance schedules.
  4. Review and gather electrical one-line diagrams and identify discrepancies requiring updates.
  5. Demonstrate competency in troubleshooting and repairing PLC-controlled equipment, instrumentation interfaces, VFD systems, and motor control circuits.

Within One (1) Year

  1. Develop and maintain a comprehensive critical spare parts inventory for electrical, control, and automation equipment throughout Water and Wastewater facilities.
  2. Complete a facility-by-facility assessment of electrical infrastructure and provide recommendations for equipment replacement, modernization, reliability improvements, and capital improvement planning.
  3. Develop and/or update Power Down/Power Up Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for a minimum of five (5) critical facilities.
  4. Identify and implement at least three (3) process improvements that enhance electrical reliability, safety compliance, equipment availability, or maintenance efficiency.
  5. Assist in maintaining compliance with NFPA 70E, NFPA 70B, OSHA, and City electrical safety standards through documentation, inspections, corrective actions, and preventive maintenance activities.
  6. Complete Arc Flash program review activities, including verification of equipment labeling, documentation updates, and recommendations for maintaining compliance with NFPA 70E requirements.
  7. Obtain Infrared Thermography Certification and perform documented infrared inspections on critical electrical equipment to support predictive maintenance and reliability programs.
  8. Demonstrate the ability to independently perform troubleshooting, maintenance, and repair of critical electrical and industrial control systems with minimal supervision.
  9. Provide technical recommendations and support for future electrical projects, upgrades, asset management initiatives, and electrical safety improvements.
