Job Description Summary

The Recreation Specialist coordinates, promotes, implements, and evaluates recreational activities such as senior programs, special interest classes, preschool & youth camps. The Recreation Specialist report to a Recreation Coordinator or a Recreation Programmer, and communication between the two is constant and fluid. This is a part-time position with up to 25-29 hours per week during the months of August – February and 29-40 hours per week March - July. Due to the nature of hours per week for this position this candidate will be required to pay into ASRS (Arizona State Retirement System).

The ideal candidate will possess at least six months of recreation experience, strong leadership abilities, effective communication skills, and exceptional customer service skills. Key responsibilities include assisting in program delivery, training and scheduling staff, monitoring staff performance, ensuring the safety of all patrons, and being flexible to support various division areas as needed.

Essential Functions

This information is intended to be descriptive of the key responsibilities of the position. The following functions do not identify all duties performed by the incumbent. Other duties and responsibilities will be performed as assigned.


  • Researches new programs, create flyers, contact vendors, and order and pick up supplies.
  • Assists in recruiting, overseeing and training the part-time and seasonal recreation staff; directs various staff members by conducting meetings, assigns and monitor’s work; and assists staff with duties when necessary.
  • Supervises the purchase, distribution, care, use and maintenance of supplies and equipment for assigned programs.
  • Assists in planning, organizing, implementing and evaluating a variety of recreation activities and specialized events. Attends meetings as assigned.
  • Ensures safety of participants and ensures program and/or facility compliance with city, county, state and national laws, regulations and standards.
  • Provides excellent customer service through daily interactions with the public related to program areas of oversight.
  • Maintains effective relationships with associates, participants, community groups, administration and the general public.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Formal Education/Knowledge: Work requires knowledge of a specific vocational, administrative, or technical nature that may be obtained with six-months/one year of advanced study or training past the high school equivalency. Community college, vocational, business, and technical or correspondence schools are likely sources. Appropriate certification may be awarded upon satisfactory completion of advanced study or training
  • Experience: Minimum 6 months experience in a related field.
  • Certifications and Other Requirements: Valid Driver's License, CPR and First-Aid certifications obtained within 3 months of hire.
  • Reading: Work requires the ability to read staff reports, memorandums, letters, and general correspondence.
  • Math: Work requires the ability to perform general math calculations such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.
  • Writing: Work requires the ability to write reports, letters, registration forms and flyers, and accident and incident forms.
  • Managerial: Semi-Complex - Work requires the occasional direction of helpers, assistants, seasonal employees, interns, or temporary employees.
  • Policy/Decision Making: Significant - The employee normally performs the duty assignment after receiving general instructions as to methods, procedures, and desired end results. There is some opportunity for discretion when making selections among a few, easily identifiable choices. Work involving discretion is typically reviewed before finalized.
  • Technical Skills: Broad Application - Work requires the use of standard technical skills appropriate to the work environment of the organization. Limited analysis and independent thinking are utilized.
  • Interpersonal/Human Relations Skills: Moderate - Interactions may involve support of controversial positions or the negotiation of sensitive issues or important presentations. Contacts may also involve stressful, negative interactions requiring high levels of tact and the ability to respond to aggressive interpersonal interactions
