OPEN & PROMOTIONAL EXAMINATION - SIX MONTH PROBATIONARY PERIOD


Job Description: Under general supervision, inspects, repairs and maintains the Police Department helicopters, including helicopter piston engines, helicopter turbine engines, rotor systems, transmissions, fuel controls, governors, magnetos and police equipment used on helicopters.  This classification will be expected to diagnose, resolve and oversee complex helicopter repairs and mechanical issues.

Reporting Relationships:

This position reports to a Police Sergeant.

Cyber Security

Actively participate in maintaining a secure computing environment by adhering to and implementing City cybersecurity policies, procedures, and best practices. This includes understanding common cyber threats such as phishing and malware, and promptly reporting suspicious activities.

 

MINIMUM REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

The following functions are typical for this classification. Incumbents may not perform all listed functions and/or may be required to perform additional or different functions from those set forth below to address business needs and changing business practices.

 

An equivalent combination of experience and education sufficient to perform the essential job functions and provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying.

 

Education:

High School diploma or equivalent is required. 

 

Experience:

Five years of experience completing major and minor repairs in helicopter maintenance including three years of experience maintaining MD500 Series helicopters is required.

 

Certifications/Licenses

FAA Airframe and Powerplant Certificate is required.  
Must be eligible for FAA Inspection Authorization (IA) and obtain the authorization before the end of the probationary period.

 

Transportation:

For staff without a valid California Driver’s License, the ability to utilize an alternative method of transportation when needed to carry out job-related essential functions is required.

Promotional Eligibility 

Any City of Glendale employee who meets the minimum qualifications for this position, has completed probation or six months of City employment, and is occupying a permanent full-time classification. Hourly City employees may be considered, provided that they furnish proof of continuous employment immediately preceding the final filing date, which would equal a minimum of six months of full-time service or 1040 part-time hours.  (Civil Service Rule VIII 4-E). 

 

Working Conditions

Work is primarily performed outside in a variety of field and weather conditions.

Work is primarily performed Monday to Friday during regular office hours.

EVALUATION OF APPLICATION: All applications, resumes and submitted reference materials will be reviewed and evaluated and only the best-qualified candidates based on applicable experience will be invited to the written examination. Approximately the top 15 scoring candidates who achieve a minimum passing score of 70% on the written examination will be invited to the further stages of the selection process. 

ORAL INTERVIEW: (Weight of 100%) To evaluate the applicant's experience, education, knowledge, skills, and general background for the position.

Candidates must achieve a minimum score of 70.00% in order to be placed on the eligible list.

BACKGROUND INVESTIGATION: A comprehensive background investigation will be conducted on all finalists, which will review and verify personal history including, but not limited to financial responsibility, criminal history, drug use history, driving record, and verification of application materials. Significant issues or omissions in the above-stated areas may be grounds for disqualification. Background investigation will include a polygraph and Livescan fingerprinting. TIME AND PLACE OF THE EXAMINATION WILL BE ANNOUNCED: Evaluations will be based on the candidate's education and experience relevant to the position.  Examinations will assess evaluate the candidate's education, experience, knowledge and skills related to the job.  The City of Glendale reserves the right to modify the examination components or their weighting. If changes are necessary, candidates will be informed of the specific examination components and their weight before the examination is administered. The selected candidate will undergo a background check, including Livescan fingerprinting.  The City of Glendale complies with state and federal obligations to provide reasonable accommodations for applicants and employees with disabilities.
