OPEN & PROMOTIONAL EXAMINATION –SIX-MONTH PROBATIONARY PERIOD
Classifications in this occupational series perform skilled work in general repair and maintenance of irrigation systems, including sprinklers, main lines, lateral lines, irrigation controllers, and backflow prevention devices. This is the entry level classification in the Irrigation Technician Series.
Essential functions of the job include, but are not limited to, the following:
Inspects, maintains, adjusts, installs, repairs and replaces irrigation systems and components using hand or power tools by laying, removing, replacing or repairing pipes, valves, sprinkler heads and irrigation clocks.
Reads and interprets blueprints, diagrams and schematics, uses probes and digs areas to locate, install or repair irrigation lines.
Programs irrigation controllers and provides input regarding watering schedules.
Builds forms, mixes and pours cement to establish, repair, and/or secure close base structures.
Orders, stores and maintains parts, tools, supplies and equipment.
Prepares and maintains work logs, records and reports.
Locates, replaces and repairs low voltage underground irrigation wiring. Troubleshoots and repairs or replaces backflow prevention devices.
Interfaces with other City departments to implement irrigation system projects. Drives City truck to work locations in outlying City facilities.
Loads and unloads heavy materials and moves heavy furnishings and other equipment.
Ensures Department services are provided with exceptional customer service and the highest level of ethical standards.
Assumes responsibility for ensuring the duties of the position are performed in a safe, efficient manner.
Performs other related duties as assigned or as the situation requires.
Minimum Requirements
Experience
Two years of recent, paid work experience performing maintenance and repair of irrigation systems.
Education/Training
High School Diploma or equivalent.
License(s)/Certification(s)
Valid Class C California driver's license.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Knowledge of:
Computerized and solar powered Irrigation systems, components, maintenance and repair. Plumbing and pipe fitting techniques.
Knowledge of and skill in:
Basic mathematical computations. Exceptional customer service practices.
Hand and power tool use and operation, including the use of voltage meters and remote control units.
Safety practices in the operation of power tools and equipment.
Skill in:
Making independent judgments and decisions based on standard section policy or procedures.

Selection Process
EVALUATION OF APPLICATION: Submitted Application will be reviewed to ensure applicants meet the minimum requirements. Only the most qualified applicants will be invited to participate in the selection process.
Candidates must pass each exam component with a minimum score of 70.00% in order to be placed on the eligible list.PERFORMANCE EXAMINATION: (Weight of 100%) To evaluate the applicant's irrigation knowledge and technical skills. Approximately the top 12 scoring candidates who score the highest on the performance examination will advance to the next stage of the selection process.
TIME AND PLACE OF THE EXAMINATION WILL BE ANNOUNCED. Evaluations will be based on the candidate's education and experience relevant to the position. Examinations will assess evaluate the candidate's education, experience, knowledge and skills related to the job. The City of Glendale reserves the right to modify the examination components or their weighting. If changes are necessary, candidates will be informed of the specific examination components and their weight before the examination is administered. The selected candidate will undergo a background check, including Livescan fingerprinting.
