What are the responsibilities and job description for the Integrated Waste Truck Operator position at CITY OF GLENDALE CA?
The Position
OPEN & PROMOTIONAL EXAMINATION - SIX MONTHS PROBATIONARY PERIOD
Under general supervision, positions in this classification perform semi-skilled work in the operation of various types of refuse collection trucks.
Essential functions of the job include, but are not limited to, the following:
Ensures Department services are provided with exceptional customer service and the highest level of ethical standards.
Picks up refuse container from curb or parkway and empties it into hopper on truck.
Picks up or sweeps up any refuse which is spilled on refuse route.
Pushes refuse carts/bins to and from subterranean parking lots and back yards.
May pick up and deliver commercial refuse bins.
Handle and load bulky items into rear loaders or onto stake bed trucks.
Operates the hopper packing mechanism.
Assists in keeping the equipment clean.
May paint, steam, clean, and make minor repairs to refuse bins.
May operate packer truck to empty carts/bins containing refuse, organics or recyclables.
May have the opportunity to participate in related divisional cross-training efforts. Experience and qualifications gained in this cross training may apply towards promotional opportunities and transfers.
Drives truck on an assigned route.
Assists in the cleaning of trucks.
May be required to drive a street sweeper or PB loader when needed.
Assumes responsibility for ensuring the duties of the position are performed in a safe efficient manner.
Performs other related duties as assigned or as the situation requires.
Minimum Requirements
An equivalent combination of experience and education sufficient to perform the essential job functions and provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying.
Experience
Six months of experience in driving a truck.
Education/Training
High School Diploma or equivalent.
License(s)/Certification(s)
Valid California Class B driver's license and valid medical certificate.
Must provide a current copy of his/her DMV driving record with job application.
Multiple or major traffic accidents, moving violations, and/or license suspensions within the last five years prior to the date of application may be grounds for disqualification.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Skill in:
Conducting a pre-trip and post-trip vehicle inspection(s).
Observing and following safety procedures.
Safely operating various City vehicles.
Knowledge of and skill in:
Exceptional customer service practices.
Ability to:
Provide exceptional customer service to those using the Public Works Department.
Model and practice the highest standards of ethical conduct.
Communicate effectively in English.
Develop necessary skills from on the job training and meet standards of performance for the classification by the end of the probationary period.
Foster a teamwork environment.
Move and load bulky items onto collection vehicles, and when necessary, do so with the aid of appropriate equipment, or assistance from others.
Obtain and maintain a valid California Class B driver's license and medical certificate.
Perform strenuous manual labor such as pulling and pushing heavy bins up and down steep inclines.
Read, write and comprehend directions in English.
Repeatedly climb in and out of a truck.
Repeatedly lift and carry articles weighing up to 70 pounds.

Willingness to:
Assume responsibility for maintaining a safe working environment.
Work overtime as requested.
Work the necessary hours and times, to accomplish goals, objectives and required tasks.
Work a 5/40 work schedule.
Promotional Eligibility
Any City of Glendale employee who meets the minimum qualifications for this position, has completed probation or six months of City employment, and is occupying a permanent full-time classification on file in the Human Resources Department. Hourly City employees may be considered, provided that they furnish proof of continuous employment immediately preceding the final filing date, which would equal a minimum of six months of full-time service or 1040 part-time hours. (Civil Service Rule VIII 4-E).

Candidates must pass each exam component with a minimum score of 70.00% in order to be placed on the eligible list.
PERFORMANCE EXAMINATION: (Weight of 100%) To evaluate the applicant's knowledge, skill and ability to drive a waste truck .
TIME AND PLACE OF THE EXAMINATION WILL BE ANNOUNCED. Evaluations will be based on the candidate's education and experience relevant to the position. Examinations will assess evaluate the candidate's education, experience, knowledge and skills related to the job. The City of Glendale reserves the right to modify the examination components or their weighting. If changes are necessary, candidates will be informed of the specific examination components and their weight before the examination is administered. The selected candidate will undergo a background check, including Livescan fingerprinting.
