JOB SUMMARY: This position is responsible for performing firefighting and EMT duties
MAJOR DUTIES:
- Performs EMT duties, including assisting the paramedics in CPR, shocking, intubation; transports critically injured or ill patients.
- Operates fire apparatus and other equipment/tools; maintains equipment/tools and fire apparatus.
- Performs fire suppression duties
- Cleans, inspects, and restocks the ambulance.
- Performs fire suppression duties; extinguishes fires by the use of hoses, manual tools, ladders, axes, and chain saws; performs overhaul and salvage after the fire has been extinguished.
- Participates in community outreach programs to advocate fire prevention and life safety.
- Cleans and maintains the fire station and emergency response vehicles.
- Performs special assignments such as installing child car safety seats.
- Inspects local businesses and structures.
- Maintains and expands job knowledge, skills, and abilities; engages in training and continuing education programs. Build and maintain positive working relationships with co-workers, other City employees and the public using principles of good customer service.
- Establish and maintain effective, tactful and positive working relationships with those contacted in the course of work including various cultural and ethnic groups.

KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED BY THE POSITION:
- Knowledge of fire suppression and emergency medical techniques.
- Knowledge of emergency driving techniques.
- Knowledge of city street maps and hospital locations.
- Knowledge of fire and building codes.
- Knowledge of the purpose and use of the tools, equipment, and apparatus used in fire suppression, rescue, and emergency medical assistance activities.
- Skill in the operation of a two-way radio.
- Skill in the installation of child safety seats.
- Skill in oral and written communication.
- Skill in demonstrating an entrepreneurial spirit by generating new, innovative ideas and better methods to accomplish tasks and complete projects.
- Skill in demonstrating teamwork by contributing the overall success of the organization with flexibility, cooperation and communication.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Ability to read, write and perform mathematical calculations at a level commonly associated with the completion of high school or equivalent.
- Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position, usually associated with the completion of an apprenticeship/internship or having had a similar position for one to two years.
- Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver's license issued by the State of Missouri for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.
- Ability to meet current requirements set forth by the National Fire Protection Association and the certification standards as established by the Missouri State Fire Marshal's Office.
- Possession of or readily obtain appropriate State of Missouri EMS license.

- Must present Fire Service Entrance Exam Score taken within the last 24 months OR Lateral Entry with 2 plus years at similar-sized department.
