Representative Job Duties

  • Reviews mechanical construction plans, blueprints, and specifications to ensure compliance with applicable laws, zoning ordinances, and mechanical codes.
  • Makes on-site inspections of all mechanical installations including, heating, ventilating, air conditioning and related systems. Inspects materials and methods, connections, fluid lines and adequate ventilation in both residential and commercial buildings to ensure conformity to approved plans; resolves on-going problems and/or questions; follows -up on complaints and inquiries relating to mechanical problems.
  • Advises mechanical contractors, builders and the public regarding mechanical codes, licensing, permits, proper material and procedures.
  • Investigates violations of mechanical codes and ordinances and takes necessary action to enforce legal requirements; attends court sessions and gives testimony as required.
  • Prepares correspondence and reports, and maintains detailed records in BS&A.
  • Performs related duties as required.

Job Requirements - As Determined By the City Of Southfield

  • High school graduate or equivalent.
  • Must possess a Mechanical Contractor’s License with the following minimum classifications: #1 Hydronic heating & cooling and process piping, #2 HVAC equipment, #4 Refrigeration, and #9 Fire Suppression a plus or the ability to obtain within one year;
  • One to two years plan review experience.
  • Two (2) years’ experience as an Mechanical Inspector, OR six (6) years construction experience at the Journeyman level sufficient to produce an in-depth knowledge and understanding of the State of Michigan Mechanical, Michigan Energy Code, Michigan Building Code, Michigan Residential Code and related standards and the ability to apply this knowledge in the field.
  • Effective written and oral communication skills and the ability to work effectively with others.
  • Registration as a Mechanical Inspector and Plan Reviewer with the State of Michigan.
  • Valid Michigan driver's license and a good driving record.

Supplemental Information

The selection process will include the completion of a City of Southfield application, a review of the applicant's qualifications, driving record and criminal history check, and an oral board interview. Selected candidates will be subject to a level 2 background investigation. Each step of the process must be passed before the applicant will be moved to the next step.

Applicants who meet the minimum requirements will be notified by email to attend the oral board interview. Applicants must maintain all minimum requirements and certifications while waiting for consideration for employment. Names of the successful candidates will remain eligible for consideration for nine months from placement on the eligibility list.

Retirement Health Savings

The city provides term life insurance benefits with accidental death and dismemberment for qualified employees as soon as possible, through the proper insurance carrier in accordance with the following schedule:

AFSCME 329: 0-30 months employment $30,000 life and ADD, after 30 months of employment $50,000 term life, accidental death and dismemberment coverage.

Retirement savings account with no employer contribution. Funds, added to a 457 can be pre-tax or post-tax.

Pre Tax funds lower taxable income in bi-weekly paycheck; however, taxes may have to be paid upon the distribution of funds in retirement.

Post-tax deferrals are taken from already taxed funds in your paycheck, which means that little to no taxes will be taken upon distribution in retirement. Loans are available.

75% reimbursement for tuition and fees (excluding late fees) for city-related classes or degree programs with a grade of "B" or better, up to $2,500 annually, plus 75% for required books.

Residency Bonus

Annual residency bonus of 1.5% of annual salary by Jan 1st with proof of residency. Elected officials and contractual employees ineligible.

Family Medical Leave Act worked up to 1250 hours or one year. Can take off time to care for a medical emergency for themselves or immediate family members for up to 12 weeks unpaid. Absences approved by BASIC or FMLA vendor.

FSA & Dependent Care

Flexible Spending Accounts and Dependent care through TASC are pre-tax funds that are used to cover certain out-of-pocket medical expenses and childcare costs. A total dollar amount is elected, and a debit card is sent to you to pay for incurred expenses.

Pre-tax funds are deducted bi-weekly to cover the cost of the total amount you have elected. There is an annual election limit of $3,300 for 2025.
