PARKS, RECREATION AND CEMETERY MAINTENANCE WORKER

Department: Parks, Cemetery, and Recreation Maintenance

Reports To: Public Works Director

Position Summary

Under the supervision of the Public Works Director, the Parks, Cemetery, and Recreation Maintenance Worker performs manual labor work in maintaining all city parks and city property, ball fields, lake and reservoir grounds and cemetery. General responsibilities include watering, edging, weed trimming, mowing, brush and trash removal, tree trimming, maintenance, and other city beautification projects.

Examples of Work Performed

· Mows, trims and edges the grass in city parks, lakes reservoir, and ball fields, cemetery and streetscape areas such as 4th and 5th Avenues.

· Maintains landscaping in front of City Hall and Donna Harris Memorial Park.

· Cleans and maintains restrooms at city park facilities.

· Paints facilities, prepares ball fields and sprays weeds.

· Empties trash barrels in city parks and keeps parks clean of trash and debris.

· Digs and fills graves.

· Other duties as assigned.

Experience

One to three years of experience in landscaping or parks maintenance is preferred. Employees are expected to have acquired the necessary knowledge and skills to perform the job reasonably well after six months in the position.

Education

High school diploma or GED preferred.

Skills

The Skills required include the ability to operate mowers, tractors, weed eater, chain saw, brush cutter, and gravesite preparation.

The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to fifty (50) pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, and the ability to adjust focus. Must maintain a physical condition appropriate to the performance of assigned duties and responsibilities, which may include working closely with others, and occasional public contact.

Problem Solving & Decision Making

Problem solving is a factor in this position. Problems include maintenance of equipment, repairs to equipment and assets including benches, vehicles, playground equipment, baseball fields, fence, and other City of Garnett property.

Accountability

Employee is not responsible for budgetary control of department and does not participate in the annual departmental budgetary process.

Supervision

Limited supervision is required and job-related decisions are reviewed by the Public Works Director or a department Foreman. Employee does not have supervisory responsibility over subordinate personnel.

Personal Relations

Continual contact with other city departments and occasional contact with the general public.

Residency

There is no residency requirement for this position.

Working Conditions

Outside weather conditions during all seasons, manual labor, and working with fuels, chemicals, and lawn care equipment.

Salary and Hours

Salary is based on qualifications with a starting wage of $16.00 per hour. This position is an 8-hour day shift, forty-hour workweek with occasional emergency callouts and scheduled weekend grave openings as needed.
