The City of Garden City is accepting applications for Fleet Manager with the Fleet Maintenance Department. This position plans, supervises, and evaluates work activities in the care and maintenance of the City’s Fleet. Responsible and reports to the Public Works Operations Manager.
Supervisory Status: Assists in preparing and monitoring the current year’s budget. Supervises assigns, evaluates work performed by the work crew. Accountable for Division’s performance and initiates disciplinary action when City and Departmental policies are violated.
Principal Job Responsibilities:
- Plans, schedules, and directs work activities involving fleet maintenance, developing specifications, and conducting fleet evaluations.
- Supervise mechanics. Approves individual performance evaluation under City Policies and Procedures.
- Recommends supplies and equipment purchases for division/section budget recommendations.
- Requisitions supplies and materials.
- Trains employees in proper work procedures and equipment operation.
- Responds to department requests for information.
- Administers and supports a strong, vigorous safety program.
- Knowledge of the operation of all equipment pertaining to the City fleet.
- Fabrication repair (welding and cutting) of equipment as necessary.
- Prepares for and participates in work activities during snow season as required.
- Required "on-call" duty, including storm call-outs.
- Subject to the Department's Random Drug/Alcohol testing program.
- Maintains equipment, vehicles, tools, supplies, facilities, and grounds.
- May represent the City at meetings, workshops, seminars, or civic functions as requested.
- Performs any other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Knowledge/Skills in locating and adjusting defects in vehicles and equipment. Knowledge of standard practices and equipment used in mechanical repair. Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety practices and procedures. Ability to perform physical work activities in various weather conditions. Ability to understand verbal and written instructions. Proficient computer skills- outlook, word, excel, and experience in using computerized maintenance tracking software.
Education, Certification, and Experience: High school diploma or GED. Vocational school coursework or diploma preferred over three years of mechanical experience required plus one year of supervisory experience. Valid Kansas driver's license required. A Kansas Class B CDL driver’s license is required within six months from the date of employment. Applicant must make available drug testing history and pass a drug test.
Environment: Work is performed in all types of weather. The majority of work is performed indoors. Work may also be performed outdoors, i.e., moderate to extreme cold and heat, snow, rain, hail, sleet, high and gusting winds, dust, and dry conditions. Surfaces: Includes, but is not limited to concrete, dirt, sand, gravel, asphalt, grass, and wood.
Physical Characteristics: Includes, but is not limited to, bend, kneel, push, pull, reach, hold, stand, walk, jump, sit, drive, and ability to lift up to a maximum of 100 pounds and frequently lift and carry 75-100 pounds.
