ABOUT THE POSITION

Temporary/Seasonal Position

March 2026 through First weekend of August 2026

Under direct supervision, employees in this "at-will" classification perform a variety of semi-skilled tasks in the area of recreation. This seasonal/temporary position for the City of Galt will oversee the operations of a recreational swim team program including, but not limited to scheduling, training, and evaluating swim team practices and competitive meets.

Example of Duties


The following duties are typical for this position. The position may also be required to perform additional or different duties from those set forth below.

  • Is responsible for the efficient and effective supervision of the pool and facility during the respective workout period and swim meets.
  • Works with the Pool Manager and the Recreation Supervisor to plan the season including practice times, swim meets, and social activities.
  • Works with the Pool Manager and the Recreation Supervisor to communicate information to all swim coaches, lifeguard, and patrons.
  • Creates work schedules for coaches.
  • Attends monthly Parent Board Meetings.
  • Lead a team of coaches.
  • Oversees the actions of all assistant coaches, lifeguards, and "Gator Aides", participants, and patrons.
  • Is responsible for keeping accurate records of swim meet results for all swimmers.
  • Prepares entries for meets, with maximum participation as the primary consideration for all participants.
  • Maintains discipline and control during workouts and at meets, through the enforcement of the facility rules.
  • Promotes and enforces safety procedures; renders First Aid, CPR, and AED lifesaving procedures as required.
  • Coaches and instructs sport specific techniques to participants.
  • Prepares, practices, and seeds swim meets.
  • Actively recruits new swimmers to perpetuate the program and encourages all swimmers to attain their maximum potential.
  • Communicates appropriate City, League, and Board information to participants and/or parents.
  • Mediates problems as they arise from parents, swimmers, and coaches.
  • Communicates all issues, questions, concerns from staff and customers.
  • Exercise fairness and consistency with all participants and families.
  • Plan activities to increase the spirit and enthusiasm of all swimmers, families, and coaches.
  • Motivate and encourage all swimmers.
  • Attend all provided trainings.
  • May also perform other nonessential duties as assigned.

Typical Qualifications


Any combination of experience and training that would provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required knowledge and abilities would be:

Experience:

  • Must be 18 years of age at time of hire.
  • Must have prior coaching experience.

Special Requirements:

  • Possession of an American Red Cross (ARC) Lifeguard Training Certification which includes CPR for the Professional Rescuer and First Aid or equivalent.
  • Must have a current and valid TB Test pursuant to Public Resources Code 5163.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Depending on assignment, must possess strength, stamina and mobility to work indoors in an office setting/recreational facility or to perform required work out doors including: frequent bending, stooping, kneeling, reaching, climbing, and walking on uneven surfaces; lifting up to 40 pounds with occasional lifting up to 50 pounds; use of standard office equipment and/or recreation equipment including a computer and handheld devices; constant use of overall vision; and hearing and speech to communicate in person and over the telephone and/or radio. Must be willing to work out doors in all weather conditions with possible exposure to loud noise, traffic, and potentially hazardous conditions such as exposure to chemicals, fumes and other environmental substances.

ENVIRONMENTAL ELEMENTS

Employees may work in the field and are occasionally exposed to loud noise levels, cold and/or hot temperatures, vibration, confining workspace, chemicals, mechanical and/or electrical hazards. Incumbents may be exposed to blood and body fluids rendering First Aid and CPR are required to wear appropriate attire for the recreation activity to which they are assigned. Employees may interact with upset staff and/or public and private representatives in interpreting and enforcing departmental policies and procedures.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Must be able to pass a background investigation, including fingerprinting. May be required to work a varied schedule of hours, which may include early mornings, evenings, weekends, and holidays at a variety of City facilities. Work may be occasionally performed indoors. Basic cleaning of facilities may include exposure to cleaning agents.

At-Will Employment

A Temporary Employee is an at-will employee assigned to work in a position less than 940 hours per fiscal year. Employees appointed to positions designated at-will means that both the employee and the City have the right to terminate employment at any time, with or without advance notice, and with or without cause. At-will employees have no access to administrative grievance and/or disciplinary appeals procedures described and explained in this Manual. The terms and conditions of employment for full time at-will employees will be outlined in a personal services contract executed upon appointment. Part-time and temporary employees are at-will with the terms of employment outlined in the "At-Will Statement" signed at time of hire. Nothing in the City of Galt Personnel Manual, the "At-Will Statement", or in an employee's contract shall limit the right to terminate employment at-will.

Paid Sick Leave

In Accordance with the Health Workploace Health Families Act of 2014, the City of Galt provides paid sick leave for all employees. Effective July 1 2015, temporary employees shall accrue paid sick leave as provided for in AB 1522, ABS. Paid sick leave accrues at the rate of one hour per every thirty (30) hours worked.

Deferred Compensation

Temporary employees are not eligible to receive any City provided employee benefits, except participation in the City's 457 Deferred Compensation Plan and as provided by applicable law. The employee may elect to have any amount of money up to the legal limit withheld from their regular paycheck and placed in a deferred compensation plan in accordance with Section 457 of the Internal Revenue Code.

Temporary employees participate in an alternate plan called the Public Agency Retirement Services Alternate Retirement System 457 Plan (PARS ARS

State Disability Insurance

The City participates in the California State Disability Insurance (SDI) and is funded through employee payroll deductions.
