INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY TECHNICIAN

JOB DESCRIPTION

GENERAL PURPOSE:

Under the supervision of the IT Director, the primary responsibility of this position is to provide IT support to the City of Gallup, its employees, and its offices. The IT Technician will provide onsite and remote desktop support, application support, telecom support, and network support. This includes maintaining, repairing, and maintaining computers, devices, and networks.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Responsible for IT help desk requests for the City of Gallup (workstation, network, application system problems, IP phones, etc.)
• Initial contact for all computer-related issues
• Troubleshoot and resolve workstation, network, phone, and other technical problems within the City
• Provide technical assistance and training to staff for any computer-related issues
• Facilitate and execute hardware moves/changes
• Assist in deploying IT-related projects.
• Work with the Network Administrator to assist in deploying new servers, SAN/NAS, Routers, Switches, and cabling
• Build, install, and maintain computers and related equipment such as printers, scanners, etc.
• Provide scheduled or on-call after-hours support. Possible off-shift and weekend duties.
• Other duties may be assigned.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

STARTING HOURLY PAY: $23.21 P/H

MINIMUM REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

• High School diploma or equivalent (GED)
• Three (3) years of experience in PC desktop support/repair, network technology, and information systems
• Valid driver’s license. Must meet City’s insurability requirements

Other Conditions:

• Must pass a background check.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

• Associate's degree in Computer Science, Computer Information Systems, Management Information Systems or a related discipline is desirable.
• Experience with Microsoft MCSE, CISCO, and CompTIA, Network certifications, or equivalent experience is desirable.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

• Knowledgeable in installation and administration of Windows PC operating systems (includes Windows 10)
• Knowledgeable in Microsoft Office 2021, 2019 & 365 Applications (including Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint, and Outlook)
• Working knowledge of TCP/IP-based network protocols and related system utilities
• Skilled in interviewing non-technical users to determine problems and also conveying technical issues to other support staff.
• Must possess good communication skills, work well in a team environment, have good problem solving/troubleshooting skills, be diligent, self-motivated, reliable.
• Courteous to coworkers and IT Help Desk customers.
• Ability to learn IT-related technologies, languages, operating systems, and applications.
• Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.

WORKING ENVIRONMENT:

The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job.

The working environment consists of the IT Help Desk (located within the IT Department) and other offices within the City of Gallup. Incumbents may be required to crawl under desks or reach behind office furniture. In cabling duties, the working environment consists of a crawlspace, false ceilings, working from ladders, and cutting holes in drywall. Personal protection equipment (ie: respirator, safety glasses, etc.) and training will be provided in cases where job design cannot eliminate exposure to hazard.
