To operate the heaviest and most complex machinery and equipment for the performance of assignments; to perform a variety of semi-skilled and skilled maintenance tasks on a regular basis.   Employees are required to be fully trained in all procedures related to assigned area of responsibility. Includes participating in labor activities necessary to completion of assigned tasks.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

Duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:

Essential Functions:

  • Ensure that all established safety practices and regulations are observed while work is performed.
  • Maintain system and repair problems occurring within the assigned task.
  • Operate, maintain and perform minor repairs on a variety of machinery and equipment including backhoe, trencher, Bob Cat loader, tapping machine, air compressor, grinder, pumps, dump truck, wastewater machine and line locator.
  • Dig up water and sewer lines; locate water line leaks and breaks; assist in repairs; refill trenches after repairs have been made utilizing completion requirements.
  • Troubleshoot and investigate water and wastewater line problems; trace and locate leaks and breaks; excavate water and sewer lines in a manner that will not damage the lines or any nearby utilities.
  • Respond to service calls concerning water and sewer utilities emergencies or problems on a stand-by basis; work to reduce state of emergency and correct problems; perform overtime duties as necessary or required in order to maintain proper functioning order.
  • Locate water and wastewater lines; perform water and wastewater taps for new service.
  • Remove concrete and asphalt to locate water or wastewater line problem areas; repair broken water and wastewater lines; install new pipe and connectors; replace concrete or asphalt.
  • Inspect and clean manholes; construct and rebuild manholes; repair inverts in manhole floors and other problems.
  • Perform maintenance on assigned City vehicle; maintain proper fluid levels; report the need for any major repairs to supervisor.
  • Operate the wastewater jet to unclog blockage
  • Install and repair fire hydrants.
  • Set and raise or lower water meter boxes; locate water valve leaks.
  • Prepare daily work orders and request for service forms.
  • Read water meters as directed, which includes driving to water meter locations; reading water meters on an assigned route; recording reading information on hand held meter device; reporting any abnormal readings, leaks, damages or tampering; loading/unloading hand-helds, printing related reports as needed and handling problems with hand held equipment as needed.
  • Perform re-reads on water meters when unusually low or high readings have been recorded.
  • Clear area around meter boxes for accessibility as necessary.
  • Assist in pulling meters and/or changing out meters as necessary.
  • Answer questions and provide information to the public; investigate complaints and recommend corrective action as necessary to resolve complaints.

Additional Duties:

  • Perform related duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge of:

  • General construction methods and practices.
  • Knowledge of fire hydrant repair and installation.
  • Operation and maintenance requirements of a variety of machinery and equipment utilized in the performance of job assignments.
  • Practices and techniques for repairing and maintaining equipment.
  • Standard practices and procedures for assigned division.

Ability to:

  • Work independently in the absence of supervision.
  • Understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Techniques for mixing and pouring concrete.
  • Procedures for constructing manholes and unclogging sewer lines.
  • Perform the physical requirements of the job.
  • Perform work in an undesirable or hazardous environment including inclement weather, confined spaces and improper illumination.
  • Perform a variety of semi-skilled and skilled construction and maintenance tasks.
  • Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.


Experience and Training Guidelines:

Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying.  A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:


Experience:

  • General construction methods and practices with one year of experience in water/wastewater maintenance and repairs.
  • Two years of experience in operating construction equipment.

Education/Training:

High School Diploma or equivalent (GED) is required.


License(s)/Certification(s):

Possession of Class A or B CDL license, or must obtain within six (6) months of employment.

  • Frequently required to lift and/or move up to 100 pounds.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.


WORK ENVIRONMENT

Characteristics described are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job.

  • Regularly works near moving mechanical parts and in outside weather conditions.
  • Regularly exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, extreme cold, and extreme heat.
  • Occasionally works in high, precarious places and with explosives and is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, risk of electrical shock, risk of radiation, and vibration.
  • The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.
