To operate a variety of machinery and equipment in the performance of a variety of semi-skilled and skilled tasks in the construction, maintenance and repair of golf course and related facilities. This is the full journey level class within the Equipment Operator series.  Employees within this class are distinguished from the Equipment Operator I by the performance of the full range of duties as assigned under general supervision.   Employees at this level receive only occasional instruction or assistance as new or unusual situations arise, and are fully aware of the operating procedures and policies of the work unit.  Positions in this class are flexibly staffed and are normally filled by advancement from the Equipment Operator I level, or when filled from outside, require directly related work experience.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

Essential Functions:

  • Operate, maintain and perform minor repairs on a variety of machinery and equipment including mowers, tractors, aerifying machine, spray rig, and various hand and power tools.
  • Mow and trim grass within the golf course; change cups on greens and place tee markers; rake sand traps.
  • Ensure the proper functioning of the irrigation system; perform maintenance and repairs on irrigation system; manually water greens as necessary.
  • Apply various chemicals to the golf course vegetation including fertilizer, herbicides and pesticides.
  • Clean, maintain and perform minor repairs on golf course facilities; repair bridges and crossings.
  • Maintain greens through aeration and top dressing.
  • Remove and dispose of litter or debris from golf course grounds.
  • Service the ball washers.

  • Perform related duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge of:
  • Proper and safe application of various chemicals including fertilizers, herbicides and pesticides.
  • Methods and techniques for aerating golf course greens.
  • General construction methods and practices.
  • Proper length to mow grass on golf course greens.
  • Techniques for mixing and pouring concrete.
  • Procedures and practices of fire hydrant repair.
  • Operation and maintenance requirements of a variety of machinery and equipment utilized in the performance of job assignments.
  • Safety procedures for working with wild animals.
  • Practices and techniques for repairing and maintaining equipment.
  • Standard practices and procedures for assigned division.
Ability to:
  • Work independently in the absence of supervision.
  • Operate a variety of vehicles and equipment in a safe and effective manner.
  • Understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Operate, maintain and perform minor repairs on a variety of tools, machinery and equipment relevant to work assignments.
  • Perform the physical requirements of the job.
  • Perform work in undesirable or hazardous equipment including inclement weather.
  • Perform a variety of semi-skilled and skilled construction and maintenance tasks.
  • Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
Experience and Training Guidelines:
Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying.  A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:
Experience:
One year of experience comparable to that of an Equipment Operator I in the City of Gainesville.
Training:
Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade.
License(s)/Certification(s):
  • Possession of, or ability to obtain when requested by supervisor, a CDL.
  • Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid Chemical and Pesticide Applicator's license as required.

  • Frequently required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms; and talk or hear.  
  • Regularly required to sit and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.  
  • Occasionally required to lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.


WORK ENVIRONMENT

The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. 

  • Regularly works in outside weather conditions.  
  • Frequently works near moving mechanical parts.
  • Frequently exposed to vibration.
  • Occasionally works in high, precarious places.
  • Occasionally exposed to risk of electrical shock.
  • The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
