Possession of a New York State Class B Driver’s License at time of appointment is required.
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS:
This position involves the responsibility for the safe and efficient operation and care of trucks with a GVWR of over eighteen thousand pounds and various equipment demands that the incumbent accept a considerable amount of responsibility for the safety of other workers. The performance of a variety of manual tasks is required in connection with such operations. Most employees in this class are employed in the Department of Public Works. Operations of trucks and equipment is performed under general supervision, with the incumbent being responsible for making minor repairs and performing ordinary service. The incumbent does related work as required
TYPICAL WORK DUTIES:
- Operates snow plows, salt trucks, snow blowers (self-propelled), dump trucks, packers, backhoes, street sweeper, Bombadiers, loader (under 1 1/2 yard bucket), Uniloaders, Bush Hog (mowing tractors), fork lift, Ditch Witch, Vac-All (Sewer Truck) and other light equipment;
- Assists in the construction and maintenance of streets and drainage systems;
- Cleans streets of leaves, dirt and refuse, participates in snow/ice removal and control;
- Works in the City's waste management program by picking up garbage, recyclables, trash and yard waste;
- Uses various hand tools;
- Operates power driven tools and equipment such as saws, compressors, drills, mixers, and pumps;
- Assists in the construction and repair of curbs, sidewalks, culverts, catch basins, storm drains and retaining walls;
- Check, levels of oil, water batteries and windshield washer solvent in department vehicles;
- Assists in erecting, assembling and repairing snow fences, barricades, picnic tables and related equipment;
- May be required to operate motor vehicles (automobiles and trucks with a GVWR of not more than eighteen thousand pounds).
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Thorough knowledge of the operation of trucks with a GVWR of more than eighteen thousand pounds and various equipment; ability to safely and efficiently operate equipment; willingness to perform routine manual tasks; ability to make simple repairs to equipment; mechanical aptitude, manual dexterity; ability to understand and follow simple oral or written instructions; ability to follow safety procedures; willingness to work outdoors under all weather conditions; physical strength and condition commensurate with the demands of the position; and ability to operate a motor vehicle.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Education, specialized background, training and experience.
- One year experience operating automotive equipment.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
Valid New York State Class B Commercial Driver's License at time of appointment.
