What are the responsibilities and job description for the Street Department Laborer position at City of Frostburg (MD)?
The primary responsibility of the Street Department Laborer role is the collection and transportation of garbage. Additional duties include assisting with general maintenance and repair of streets, the sewer system and stormwater infrastructure, as well as snow removal operations. The ideal candidate will possess a valid Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) for garbage truck operation. For candidates that do not have a CDL, this position presents the opportunity to obtain a CDL. Work is performed under the direction of the Street Department Supervisor and requires availability for night, weekend, and holiday work as needed. This position involves primarily outdoor work and regular exposure to varying weather conditions. This position requires 3 full days and 2 partial days each week on the garbage truck.
- Main garbage collection days are Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday for City residents. These are expected to be a full days on the garbage truck.
- City garbage cans are collected on Monday and Friday. This route should take about an hour.
- Yard waste collection occurs once a month April through September and twice a month in October and November.
- Christmas tree collection occurs twice in January.
- Annual Bulk Pickup occurs once a year Citywide.
Other Duties:
- Perform routine inspections of equipment and tools. Refers defects to the Street Department Supervisor.
- Operate trucks and equipment of various sizes and weights.
- Perform ground maintenance, including mowing and weed trimming, on City-owned properties.
- Assist with City tree trimming.
- Perform snow removal operations on City streets and parking areas.
- Perform general labor related to maintenance and construction activities, including loading and unloading heavy materials and equipment.
- Frequently lift and move materials weighing up to 50 pounds, repeatedly throughout the workday.
- Perform other duties as assigned by Street Department Supervisor.- Education: HS diploma, GED or equivalent.
- Current Driver's License (any state) or equivalent.
- Ability to pass pre-employment drug screening.
- A valid CDL is preferred or eligible and able to obtain CDL within first six months.
- Perform heavy manual tasks for an extended period of time.
- Able and willing to learn a variety of unskilled and skilled labor tasks for job progression.
