Troubleshoots and diagnoses mechanical problems. HIRING RANGE: DEPENDING ON QUALIFICATIONS $18.39/hour - $28.25/hour Pay Range Minimum-Mid Point-Maximum for positions Fleet Technician Apprentice $18.39/hr. - $22.08/hr. - $25.75/hr. Fleet Technician $20.30/hr. - $24.36/hr. - $28.42/hr. Senior Fleet Technician $22.41/hr. - $26.89/hr. - $31.37/hr. Master Fleet Technician $26.64/hr. - $32.63/hr. - $38.63/hr. Fleet Certification Pay ASE Double Master Certification Pay-$150 per month, all fleet positions eligible up to and including the Fleet Supervisor. Tool Stipend-$1,800 annually for all Fleet technician positions. The position levels available are as follows: Fleet Technician Apprentice “Apprentice”/minimally skilled Technician will assist Fleet Technicians with routine preventative maintenance and repairs to City fleet vehicles. Participates in “on-the-job” training tasks, projects, and off-site training to work towards becoming a full-skilled Fleet Technician. Fleet Technician Skilled Technician capable of performing routine inspections, preventative maintenance and repairs to City fleet vehicles and heavy equipment to include gasoline, alternative fuels, and diesel fuel engines. Troubleshoots and diagnoses mechanical problems. Senior Fleet Technician Senior level skilled Technician capable of performing routine inspections, preventative maintenance and complex repairs to City fleet vehicles and heavy equipment to include gasoline, alternative fuels, and diesel fuel engines. Troubleshoots and diagnoses mechanical problems. Master Fleet Technician Senior level skilled Technician capable of performing routine inspections, preventative maintenance and complex repairs to City fleet vehicles and heavy equipment to include gasoline, alternative fuels, and diesel fuel engines. Troubleshoots and diagnoses mechanical problems. The intent of this position description is to provide a representative summary of the major duties and responsibilities performed by incumbent(s) in this position. Incumbent(s) may not be required to perform all duties in this description and incumbent(s) may be required to perform position-related tasks other than those specifically listed in this description. Essential Job Functions & Other Important Duties Essential Job Functions: Services, troubleshoots, and performs complex automotive repairs on engines and related components of electrical, mechanical and computerized vehicle systems. Troubleshoots and diagnoses mechanical problems with City equipment and vehicles to include gasoline, alternative fuels, and diesel fuel engines. Repairs and installs automotive parts. Responds to emergency construction site or roadside/field service repairs. Performs routine preventative maintenance, State Vehicle Inspections and repairs to City fleet vehicles and heavy equipment including oil changes, tire rotation or replacement and inspects batteries, brakes, fluid levels and filters. Assists in providing on-the-job training projects/tasks to Fleet Technician Apprentice and reviews completed tasks for accuracy. Inspects repairs, work by Fleet Technician Apprentice to ensure proper repairs are complete. Maintains shop area, tools, and equipment in an orderly and safe manner. Maintains inventory of parts, supplies, tools and equipment. Disposes or recycles used oils, hazardous materials, and chemicals according to established occupational and environmental regulations and practices. Diagnoses and repairs malfunctioning hydraulic systems. Reviews technical, owners and repair manuals, schematics and drawings to determine manufacturer's recommendations for troubleshooting and preventive maintenance procedures. Maintains and completes assigned work orders and logs amount of time, materials, supplies, and parts used to maintain and repair fleet vehicles and heavy equipment. Takes direction from and provides assistance to Shop Foreman when directed. Provides assistance to Shop Foreman and Fleet Services Manager when necessary. Other Important Duties: May be required to attend meetings, conferences and training. Performs other related duties as assigned. Regular and consistent attendance and punctuality for the assigned work hours is essential. Job Requirements Required Knowledge and Skills: Knowledge of maintenance and repair procedures. Knowledge of equipment repair schematics and diagrams. Knowledge of occupational health and safety rules and regulations. Knowledge of disposal and recycling techniques and procedures for hazardous materials, used oils and other chemicals. Knowledge of computers and related equipment, hardware and software to input maintenance and repair records and inventory costs, materials and hours. Knowledge of City policies and procedures. Skill in effective oral and written communications. Skill in troubleshooting and diagnosing repair issues of all City vehicles and heavy equipment. Skill in providing cost effective maintenance and repair services. Skill in providing and utilizing on the job technical and safety training. Skill in preparing and completing work orders and related reports. Skill in resolving customer complaints and concerns. Ability to verbally communicate clearly and concisely to ensure on-the-job safety. Education, Experience, and Certifications: Fleet Technician Apprentice High School Diploma or G.E.D., and two (2) years vehicle or heavy equipment mechanical repair experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Must possess State Vehicle Inspection Certification within 90 days of employment. May be required to obtain State Vehicle Inspection Certification for DOT. May be required to obtain a Class B CDL during the first nine months of employment. Must pass a pre-employment drug screen, physical agility, criminal background and MVR check. Fleet Technician High School Diploma or G.E.D., and two (2) years vehicle or heavy equipment mechanical repair experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Must possess State Vehicle Inspection Certification. May be required to obtain State Vehicle Inspection Certification for DOT. Must possess four (4) certifications in one of the following ASE (Automotive Service Excellence) categories: Automobile and Light Truck Certification Engine Repair Automotive Transmission Manual Drive Train & Axles Steering & Suspension Brakes Electrical/Electronic Systems Heating & A/C Engine Performance Light Vehicle Diesel Engines OR Medium-Heavy Truck Certification Gas Engines Diesel Engines Manual Drive Train & Axles Brakes Steering & Suspension Electrical/Electronic Systems Heating & A/C Preventive Maintenance Inspection May be required to obtain a Class B CDL during the first nine months of employment. Must pass a pre-employment drug screen, physical agility, criminal background and MVR check. May be subject to exposure to extreme weather conditions, hazardous chemicals and fumes common to automotive repair shops. Visual Acuity 2 - color, depth perception, field of vision. Kneeling – bending legs at knee to come to rest at knees. Visual Acuity 3 - determine accuracy, neatness, observe facilities/structures. Lifting – raising objects from lower to higher position, moving objects side to side, using upper extremities, back. Visual Acuity 4 - operate motor vehicles/heavy equipment. Mental Acuity – ability to make rational decisions through sound logic, deductive reasoning. Visual Acuity 5 -close acuity for inspection of small defects, machines, use measurement devices, or fabricate parts. Pulling - use upper extremities to exert force, haul or tug. Walking - on foot to accomplish tasks, long distances, or site to site. Work Environment Work performed is primarily: Heavy work: Exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Equipment and Tools Utilized: Equipment that may be utilized includes personal computer, copier, calculator, fax machine, two-way radio, cellular telephone, general mechanic hand tools, automotive diagnostic equipment, automotive equipment relating to a/c, coolant, and transmissions, vehicle lifts, and City fleet vehicles and equipment.
