Expected hiring range: $30.85 - 32.91
- Services, repairs, and maintains City-owned automobiles, trucks, and light and heavy equipment.
- Assists senior mechanics with electric and gas welding and other fabrication.
- Inspects equipment to determine the type and scope of needed repairs.
- Uses scan tools to diagnose equipment repairs needed.
- Makes field service calls when machinery breaks down while in service.
- Completes annual equipment inspection and certification, as required.
- Assists with repair parts purchases and acquisitions (pick-up).
- Enters work orders into the equipment maintenance records with occasional assistance of office personnel.
- Documents activities and completes maintenance records.
- Assists other departments in maintenance and repair of stationary equipment, such as lift station equipment, wellhouse equipment and generators.
- Advises Fleet Services Supervisor of status of equipment repairs and maintenance supply requirements.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Valid Minnesota Class B Driver’s License or ability to obtain within nine months of hire.
- Ability to obtain MN DMV Inspection Certification, and Forklift Certification within one year of hire.
- Knowledge of electric and gas welding.
- Two years of applicable experience in gas and/or diesel vehicle servicing and maintenance on light and/or heavy equipment.
Desired Qualifications:
- Valid Minnesota Class B Driver's License.
- Master Automotive Technician from ASE, completion of an 18-to-24-month college/vocational course at an accredited school in vehicle maintenance/repair, or equivalent.
- Up to five years qualified automotive mechanic skills with considerable experience on a variety of light and heavy equipment.
- Skill in testing and locating defects in mechanical equipment.
- Skill in the use of electric and gas welding and fabrication equipment.
- Considerable knowledge of the operation of gasoline and diesel engines, both large and small.
- Ability to adapt available tools and repair parts to specific problems.
- MN DMV Inspection Certification and Forklift Certification.
- Emergency Vehicle Technician Certification or similar applicable certification(s).
- Ability to read, understand, and follow written and oral instructions in English, including safety notices and maintenance manuals.
- Ability to meet the physical demands of the job as indicated in the Job Activity Requirements with or without reasonable accommodations.
- Ability to obtain Minnesota Department of Motor Vehicle Certification to perform annual DOT equipment inspection.
- Working knowledge of local, state and federal statutes, laws and ordinances relevant to department operations.
- Ability to analyze problems and to adopt quick, effective, and reasonable courses of action with due regard to surrounding hazards and circumstances.
- Ability to apply professional principles and judgement within overall goals/direction established by senior management.
- Ability to apply procedures, policies and precedents using moderate analytical ability to fit facts and conditions using generally prescribed procedures.
- Ability to have maintain regular contact with department and periodic contact with other departments, outside agencies and public to relay basic information and facts.
Physical Demands & Working Conditions:
Work is performed in an office setting and in the field. Headaches, eyestrain, and other related occupational hazards reflect the most common potential for injury in the office. Work is moderate duty with ability to lift, carry or push up to 60 pounds. Work is performed in the field under environmental conditions such as heat, cold, noise, smoke, dust, and other related conditions associated with this position. Must frequently work under high detail and moderate deadlines. This position is continuously exposed to machine tools and moving mechanical parts.
