JOB TITLE: Recreation Department Counselor

DEPARTMENT: Recreation Department

STATUS: Part-Time/Seasonal, Non-Exempt

JOB SUMMARY: Assist in implementing and running the daily Rec activities.

PAY RATE: $12-$17/hr, commensurate with education and experience

SCHEDULE OF WORK HOURS:

During the Before & After School Program, there is an early shift (6:30am-8pm) for Before School care, and a later shift (2pm-6pm) for After School Care. After school ends, Recreation Department Counselors who stay on for the summer can expect expanded hours. Historically, summer program has run from 6:30am to 6pm, and summer schedules include 40 hour full time work and overtime when applicable.

MAJOR DUTIES:

· Plan, organize, and run fun activities such as card games, ping pong, tag, etc.

• Communicate and work with children ages 5-12, at various skill levels, to provide necessary instruction and to communicate with other staff members
• Observe camper behavior assess its appropriateness, enforce appropriate safety regulations and emergency procedures, and apply appropriate behavior-management techniques
• Manage disciplinary issues with the assistance of supervisors
• Set up and break down activities while managing supplies
• Administer first aid as needed.
• Perform other related duties as required.

REQUIRED BY THE POSITION:

• Knowledge of the developmental stages of children.
• Knowledge of CPR and first aid (training available)
• Skill in scheduling, time management and resourcefulness.
• Ability to assess needs.
• Ability to impose discipline.
• Ability to be outdoors and lead and participate in physical activities.
• Ability to manage and chaperone small group activities.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED:

Works under the supervision of the Parks and Recreation Director and the Recreation Program Coordinators.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

The work requires some physical exertion such as long periods of standing; walking over rough, uneven, or rocky surfaces; recurring bending, crouching, stooping, stretching, reaching or similar activities; recurring lifting of moderately heavy items; visual and auditory ability to monitor group safety

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

• Knowledge and level of competency commonly associated with a high school diploma, experience with babysitting or other work with youth or volunteering would be helpful.
• Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the job or any equivalent combination of education and experience which demonstrates possession of the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.

Pay: $12.00 - $17.00 per hour
