Laborer
Assists in installing, maintaining and/or repairing City sanitary and storm sewers, water lines, streets, sidewalks, parks, buildings, trees, traffic signs. Operates and performs basic maintenance on a variety of vehicles and mechanical equipment. Performs related work as required. The City of Frankenmuth operates in a drug and alcohol-free environment. Pre employment screening is required.
Daily assignments are made by the Department of Public Works Superintendent, Assistant Superintendent or foreman as required. The work will be checked in progress and upon completion.

- 1. Install, maintain, and/or repair City sewers, water lines, streets, sidewalks, parks, building, trees and traffic signs.
- a. Makes excavation cuts and patch curbs, sidewalks and pavements. Erects and repairs street and traffic signs. Removes ice and snow from streets and salt streets.
- b. Cleans storm and sanitary sewers; install new sewer lines/catch basins.
- c. Install, repair, locate and mark water lines, sanitary sewer lines and storm drains as needed.
- d. Sweep streets and empty trash barrels in parks, the downtown district and other City property.
- e. Assists in performing light electrical and plumbing work needed for street lighting, troubleshooting equipment along with water and sewer plumping for City-owned buildings.
- f. Assist other departments as needed.
- g. Mow grass and trim trees in parks and on roadways. Paint buildings and refinish outdoor items such as picnic tables; maintain parks and athletic facilities; and other miscellaneous duties specified by the DPW superintendent.
- 2. Assist in the installation, maintenance and repair activities associated with the City’s streetscape
- a. Assists in preparing beds for planting, planting flowers.
- b. Assists in maintenance of fountains.
- c. Responds to emergencies outside of regular work hours.
- 3. Operates and performs basic maintenance on light and heavy equipment and vehicles in support of general Public Works projects.
- a. Operates light trucks to haul materials and equipment to work sites, plows snow and spreads salt on streets.
- b. Operates tractor, back-hoe, wood chipper and various snow removal equipment.
- c. Operates a variety of power tools such as mowers, chain saws, air hammers, sprayers, drills, sanders, grinders, welders or any other equipment used in a machine shop or fabricating shop environment.
- d. Assists in the maintenance and light repair of equipment. Washes, cleans, fuels, and lubricates, changes oil and repairs tires.
- e. Prepares and maintains records related to maintenance and repair activities.
- 4. Performs related work as required. Assist the DPW maintenance personnel and water personnel as required.

- 1. Knowledge of the procedures/practices for operating and maintaining assigned vehicles and mechanical equipment.
- 2. Knowledge of safety procedures/precautions involved in various public works projects and equipment operations.
- 3. Skilled in operation of assigned vehicles/mechanical equipment and power tools.
- 4. Required training includes a high school diploma or equivalent. Ability to obtain a State of Michigan motor vehicle operator’s CDL B-license with air brakes and tanker endorsement within 12 months of employment.
- 5. Ability and willingness to work overtime and be on call as determined by DPW Superintendent or designee.
- 6. Basic skill level in computer operations.
- 7. Knowledgeable in operations of “smart phones” or other equivalent technology.
- 8. Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with fellow employees and interacting diplomatically with the public.
- 9. Ability to work under stress, with changes in work priorities and in emergencies.

The noise level in the work environment can range from quiet to very loud.
