EXAMPLE OF DUTIES
- Works on rotating shifts, supervising police officers and other assigned staff in their duties.Supervises the special scheduling and coordinating of shift changes.Reviews a variety of police related reports prepared by subordinate officers or others for completeness and accuracy.Supervises and evaluates officers’ arrests based on circumstances and evidence.Makes day-to-day assignments as required by the needs of the department.Makes plans about individual tactical matters such as equipment to be used for particular operations or the detailed plans needed for an investigation. Develops new approaches to investigate crimes and problems in the community.Notifies the Patrol Lieutenant and the Chief of Police of major crimes or high priority, high profile incidents within the area. Maintains contact with all police personnel to coordinate efforts of members at the scene of major investigations, monitors requests for mutual aid, and provides general information about Department activities.Maintains contact with the general public, court officials, and other City officials in the performance of police activities, as assigned.Supervises and directs the activities of assigned staff; makes recommendations regarding hiring, discipline, termination or advancement of employees. Schedules employees, assigns work and monitors progress; guides, trains and develops employees in the accomplishment of their duties and professional growth; writes and conducts performance evaluations.Ensures staffing and other resources are utilized effectively to solve crimes, reduce criminal activity, and improve safety with the City.Supervises the activities of multiple officers on varied shifts and assignments.Reviewing, approving, and submitting reports and other documents submitted by officers.Monitor, review and initially approve time reporting and leave requests for assigned officers.Provides interpretation and guidance regarding department, city, state and federal policies, procedures, rules, regulations, and laws.Provides briefings to personnel on a regular basis to provide information on current issues.Maintains material, equipment, and vehicle usage and maintenance records.Performs the field duties of a commissioned officer within the police department. Responds to calls for service as needed, including intervening in disputes, investigating cases, writing reports, issues citations, and making arrests.Testifies in court proceedings as required.May write grants to secure funding for various police department programs and equipment needs as assigned.Represents the department in community events, meetings and programs. Attends professional organization meetings as assigned by the Chief of Police.Takes proper safety precautions, anticipates unsafe circumstances and acts accordingly to prevent accidents.Responsible for safety of self, others, materials, and equipment. Uses all required safety equipment.Assists the Chief of Police with directing and implementing departmental policies and procedures.Undertakes, understands, and values the concept of community-oriented policing.Coordinates crime prevention activities and community policing.Performs related duties as required by the Chief of Police to meet the needs of the City.May be required to work overtime.May supervise programs or teams as assigned.
