Are you interested in starting your career as an environmental professional, gaining hands-on experience in a laboratory, evaluating process control samples for a water treatment facility, navigating regulations, and learning how large-scale production facilities can be sustainable? The City of Fort Collins Water Production Division is seeking an enthusiastic intern to help assist with the Technical Services group in Process Control and Environmental Management while learning directly from industry professionals.

This internship is an essential steppingstone to gain valuable experience, develop professional skills, and make a real impact on the public health of your community. It is a great chance to learn more about working for a local municipality, with real impact. This internship will also allow students to fulfill their internship requirements, providing opportunities to take on special projects in a real-life setting.

Duties And Responsibilities
What will you be doing?
- Perform laboratory analyses for the Process Control Laboratory alongside two water treatment chemists to ensure that all process instruments are accurately monitoring process water.
- Learn how sample analysis is applied to plant operations and day-to-day water treatment. Ensure that water treatment is completed while maintaining compliance with required regulations.
- Provide alternative treatment analysis for scenarios outside of regularly schedule laboratory protocol while always guaranteeing that ethical lab practices are being maintained during laboratory analysis.
- Assist in the maintenance of the ISO14001 certification for the Water Treatment facility.
- Learn how to conform to a standard and all the associated requirements. Understanding how to manage document control and strong audit performance. Assist in understanding how sustainability and compliance go hand in hand.
- Understand how continual improvement, pollution prevention, and going above and beyond environmental compliance can protect the environment and the community you serve.
- Work to ensure that all administrative tasks are well supported to make all other initiative run as smoothly as possible.
- This includes but is not limited to updating or revision operating procedures, scanning documents and maintaining indexes, maintaining good housekeeping, and any other duties assigned.
- Special interest can also help drive the experience and help determine a direction to take the internship within the priorities of the group.
- Environmental Enthusiast: someone who has recently completed, or is currently pursuing a degree in Environmental Science, Ecosystem Science and Sustainability, Environmental Health and Safety, or a related field
- Technologically adept: Proficient in Microsoft Office and comfortable working with and analyzing data.
- Strong Communication: Effective written and verbal skills to adequately relay information.
- Detail Oriented: Strong organizational skills with the ability to effectively work through multiple tasks and manage deadlines.
- Team Player: Builds on collaboration and works well with others.

License, Certifications, and Safety:
- Valid driver’s license (some fieldwork is required)
- 18 years old to drive city vehicles

- Donning of personal protective equipment is required
- All personal protective equipment will be provided by the utility
- Physical : Work in a variety of environments, including, but not limited to, an office environment, industrial facilities, inside small spaces such as pump stations, outdoors on the plant grounds, in heavy construction areas, and in mountain environments.
- Physical strength to perform moderate lifting/carrying 50 lbs. for up to 100 feet
- Physical ability to perform bending, twisting, stretching, rotating, kneeling, pushing, pulling and lifting operations while in awkward positions
- Ability to operate a motor vehicle
- Ability to climb stairs and walk on uneven terrain
