Public Works Water & Sewer operator

Job Overview
The City of Florence is seeking a dependable, motivated Water & Wastewater Operator to join the Public Works Department. This position works under the supervision of the Public Works Director and is responsible for maintaining and operating the City's Class III Wastewater Treatment Plant, Class B Water System, wastewater lift stations, water wells, and the City's water distribution and wastewater collection systems.

This is a team-oriented position where operators rotate responsibilities to ensure all utility systems are properly maintained and operated. The primary focus is preventative maintenance, system inspections, utility repairs, and the reliable operation of the City's water and wastewater infrastructure.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

• Perform daily inspections, operation, and routine maintenance of the wastewater treatment plant.
• Maintain the cleanliness, appearance, and operational readiness of the treatment plant and surrounding grounds.
• Inspect, maintain, troubleshoot, and repair wastewater lift stations.
• Perform routine inspections and operational checks of municipal water wells, pumps, storage facilities, and related equipment.
• Operate, monitor, and maintain pumps, motors, valves, blowers, and treatment equipment.
• Assist with preventive maintenance and repairs on mechanical and electrical equipment.
• Repair and maintain the City's water distribution system, including water mains, service lines, valves, hydrants, and related infrastructure.
• Repair and maintain the City's wastewater collection system, including sewer mains, service lines, manholes, and related infrastructure.
• Assist with locating utilities, excavation, pipe installation, leak repairs, and emergency utility repairs.
• Collect water and wastewater samples and perform required testing.
• Maintain accurate operational logs, maintenance records, and inspection reports.
• Respond to emergency utility outages, line breaks, lift station alarms, and after-hours callouts as part of an on-call rotation.
• Operate trucks, tractors, backhoes, skid steers, excavators, and other Public Works equipment as needed.
• Follow all applicable safety procedures, environmental regulations, and City policies.
• Perform other Public Works duties as assigned by the Public Works Director.

Work Rotation

Operators rotate responsibilities to provide coverage for all utility operations, including:

• Wastewater treatment plant operations and maintenance
• Lift station inspections and maintenance
• Water well inspections and maintenance
• Water distribution system maintenance and repairs
• Wastewater collection system maintenance and repairs
• General Public Works support as needed

Minimum Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED.
• Valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record.
• Ability to obtain required water and wastewater certifications within City-established timeframes.
• Mechanical aptitude and experience using hand and power tools.
• Ability to safely operate construction and maintenance equipment.
• Ability to perform physically demanding work outdoors in all weather conditions.
• Ability to participate in an on-call rotation and respond to emergencies after normal working hours.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience in municipal water or wastewater operations.
• Water and/or wastewater operator certification.
• CDL or ability to obtain one.
• Experience operating heavy equipment and performing underground utility repairs.
• Experience with pumps, motors, mechanical maintenance, or electrical controls.

Physical Requirements

This position requires frequent lifting of up to 50 pounds, walking, climbing, bending, digging, working in trenches and confined spaces in accordance with safety regulations, operating heavy equipment, and working outdoors in varying weather conditions.
