Electricity Department dispatcher as needed, oftentimes on short notice. The job consists of fairly complex communication duties, providing communication services for Electricity. - Operates all communication equipment necessary for dispatching.
- Receives and transmits radio communications associated with the Department's operation.
- Receives and processes service calls (power outages, equipment failure, equipment, and facilities damage, non-pay reconnections, restoration of service, and customer problems).
- Determines priority of service calls and dispatches to the proper personnel.
- Assists operational personnel by analyzing outage management systems and records, and relays pertinent data to correct problems on the system.
- Informs customers of the Department's rules, regulations, and service policies.
- Assists all sections by furnishing requested data and forwarding after-hours transactions to the proper section.
- Files and log records, and data pertaining to the operation of the system.
- Records service and trouble calls, reconnections, and fills out other communicative forms as required.
- Works overtime when required.
- Operates Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) equipment.
- Serves as a contact for underground utility, telephone, and cable.
- Operates Geographical Information Systems (GIS).
- Tracks storms and advises appropriate personnel and crew of weather conditions.
- Assists the Safety Department by making notations of meter cutoffs, blanked covered meters, and pending charges for illegal diversion of power.
- Assists utility service crews by giving service directions or transformer station directions.
- Contacts the Building Department Inspector when needed for electrical inspections.
- Performs other duties when required.
- High school graduate or GED certificate.
- One year of experience working with an electric utility or as a dispatcher is preferred.
- Basic knowledge of electricity.
- Ability to speak clearly and enunciate the English language properly.
- Have a pleasant voice that transmits well over a radio communication system and telephone.
- Ability to discern communication messages transmitted simultaneously.
- Thorough knowledge of general office practices and procedures.
- Ability to remain calm and to function under stressful conditions.
- Ability to learn and interpret Department rules and regulations and service policies.
- Ability to maintain good public and employee relations.
- Ability to deal with the public courteously and tactfully.
- Ability to make judgmental decisions as to setting service priorities, dispatching the proper crew (s), and contacting engineering and technical personnel.
- Ability to operate radio communication equipment.
- Ability to learn and analyze a power system dispatching board.
- Ability to operate a computer terminal and a Supervisory Control System (SCADA) for monitoring and controlling substations.
- Ability to operate a Geographical Information System (GIS).
- Must be able to keep customer transactions and records confidential.
- Knowledge of certain geographical and landmark features of Lauderdale County when obtaining information for service calls.
Physical Demands (with or without reasonable accommodation):
- Must be able to lift up to 25 lbs. to move files or equipment.
- Must be able to sit at a desk/computer terminal for extended periods of time.
