Safety/Security Sensitive Designation:

This is a safety/security sensitive position for purposes of the Arkansas Medical Marijuana Amendment.

  1. Provide good customer service to both internal and external customers, maintain positive and effective working relationships with other City employees (especially members of their own team), and have regular and reliable attendance that is non-disruptive. 
  2. Perform supervisory responsibilities which may include interviewing, training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance, addressing complaints and resolving problems.  Carry out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the City’s policies and applicable laws.
  3. Respond to emergency incidents as a company supervisor.  Direct company tactics, strategies and tasks.  Assume control of an incident by establishing a command organization.  Formulate action plans, communicate clearly and direct activities under extreme and dangerous conditions and compressed time frames.
  4. Make emergency mediation decisions while performing all firefighting and rescue tasks with crew and ensuring scene safety. 
  5. Fill in as Battalion Chief when assigned.
  6. Assist with all aspects of training new and current personnel on all phases of service delivery.
  7. Oversight and supervision for proper operation, maintenance, testing, and housekeeping of all equipment and fire facilities. 
  8. Complete training records to properly document training as required. 
  9. Fill out reports to accurately document actions taken.  Complete incident notes, fire reports, after action reports, and any other necessary documentation in a timely manner.
  10. Evaluate effectiveness of subordinate personnel and adjust/train as necessary.
  11. Conduct inspections and testing that include but are not limited to pre-incident planning, building inspections, hydrant inspections, and hose and pump tests. 
  12. Assist in providing public education and station tours as needed.
  13. Actively participate in all entry, maintenance, and reporting of data as required.
  14. Regularly participate in either group or self-directed physical fitness activities.
  15. Special projects, equipment evaluation and program development.
  16. Answer user inquiries regarding computer software and hardware operations and submit documentation of problems related to department systems. 
  17. Basic data analysis.
  18. May be assigned to the Fire Prevention Bureau as Deputy Fire Marshal to include assignment as department Public Information Officer.
  19. May be assigned to the Training or Planning Divisions.
  20. Perform other duties as assigned.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES When Assigned as Battalion Chief include the following:

  1. Supervision of all emergency and non-emergency operations during a shift. Responsible for maintaining readiness and staffing for fire department personnel and enforcement of City and Department policies and procedures.
  2. Emergency scene management, incident command for single company, multi-company and multi-jurisdictional incidents.

 

  1. Secondary duties as assigned.

 

  1. High school diploma or general education degree (GED) plus completion of at least five (5) years of continuous service with the Fayetteville Fire Department immediately preceding the date of the written promotional examination and has successfully attained and held the rank of Driver/Operator with the Fayetteville Fire Department for two (2) years immediately preceding the date of the written promotional examination.  Must have successfully completed International Fire Service Accreditation Congress, (IFSAC), Instructor-I.  A transcript from an accredited institution documenting a minimum of twelve (12) hours of completed college coursework with at least a “C” average may substitute for a high school diploma or GED certificate.  After December 31, 2022, Fire Officer I, Incident Safety Officer, Inspector I, and NIMS ICS 300 & 400 will also be required.
  2. Must possess a valid driver’s license.
  3. Necessary certificates, licenses and registrations include: IFSAC Firefighter I and II and must maintain EMT certification.
  4. Effectively communicate with others orally and in writing.
  5. Ability to react quickly and effectively in all emergencies, natural or man-caused disasters.
  6. Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers, regulatory agencies, or members of the business community. 
  7. Must be proficient in the use of a computer and related software programs.  Must be able to effectively operate standard office equipment.
  8. Must have ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with management and staff.
  9. While performing the functions of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk and hear.        The employee is regularly required to stand, walk, and sit, reach with hands and arms, and use hands to finger, handle, or feel.  The employee frequently may be required to climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 100 pounds.        Specific vision abilities required by this job include color vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
  10. While performing the functions of this job, the employee is exposed to extremes in weather conditions; possible injury while riding on emergency vehicles or operating department equipment; hazards inherent to fire, hazardous materials, special rescue scene situations and emergency medical incidents. The noise level in the working environment is frequently loud.  Mental stress generated by involvement in life and death situations; cardiovascular stress generated by movement from resting to highly active states.

Salary : $23 - $32
