What are the responsibilities and job description for the Deputy Bailiff I (Court Security Officer) position at City of Fairfield (OH)?
Nature of Work: The Deputy Bailiff/Court Security Officer assists the Bailiff with the security of the court building to include metal detector operations, service of civil/criminal subpoenas, handling and transporting prisoners, monitoring courtroom operations, supervising community service, immobilizing impounded vehicles, and any other job function as deemed necessary for the court’s efficient and safe operation. Reports to the Bailiff and Court Administrator.
Hours: This is a full-time salaried position. The Court is open to the public Monday through Thursday from 7:00 a.m. to 4:15 p.m. and on Friday from 7:00 a.m. to 1:15 p.m.
1. Assist Bailiff to ensure safety within the court facility for the Judge, staff, public and prisoners.
2. Maintain compliance with the Ohio Court Security Standards.
3. Assist Bailiff with maintaining order and decorum both in and outside of the courtroom.
4. Assist Bailiff with the daily recording of the docket and its safe keeping. Provide audio copies of requested hearings.
5. Administer oaths to witnesses and jurors.
6. Safeguard evidence/exhibits as directed.
7. Assist in the courtroom for the safe and timely completion of the daily docket (includes scheduling of video arraignments, obtaining signatures on paperwork).
8. Assist Bailiff with the Vehicle Immobilization Program.
9. Assist Bailiff with the court’s compliance with Ohio L.E.A.D.S.
10. Responsible for daily bank deposit and mail drop.
11. Assist with the servicing and maintenance for all security equipment including court vehicles.
12. Perform metal detector, lobby and hallway monitoring responsibilities to ensure safety and security. Perform searches of persons and packages for contraband.
13. Perform Bailiff responsibilities to ensure the timely serving of civil/criminal subpoenas, processing of paperwork and set-outs (evictions).
14. Ability to read and interpret Ohio driving record/abstract.
15. Maintain firearm proficiency.
16. Perform other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required:1. Minimum five years demonstrated experience in the security field, law enforcement and/or probation or related field, including firearms.
2. Must possess a valid Ohio driver’s license and ability to maintain insurability under the City of Fairfield’s vehicle insurance policy.
3. Must successfully complete OPOTA firearm qualification upon hire, or provide current certification.
4. Proficiency in approved security procedures, use and care of firearms, restraints and other security equipment.
5. Basic computer competence including use of Word and Outlook.
6. Must possess and maintain CPR/First Aid/AED, Taser, Unarmed Self-Defense, Verbal De-escalation certifications, registrations or licenses.
7. Ability to cultivate and nurture a working relationship with local law enforcement including the Fairfield Police Department and Butler County Sheriff’s Office.
8. Working knowledge of the Ohio court system and Ohio law.
9. Reliable attendance, effective communication skills, and trustworthy.
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:
1. The work is performed in an office environment, courtroom, jail/holding facility and outdoor where the physical demands require sitting and standing for extended periods of time; may include exposure to potential personal danger.
2. Sufficient clarity of speech and hearing or other communication capabilities, with or without reasonable accommodation, which permits the employee to discern verbal instructions and to communicate effectively with others in person.
3. Sufficient visual acuity, with or without reasonable accommodation, which permits the employee to comprehend written work instructions and to review, evaluate and prepare a variety of written materials on a computer.
4. Sufficient manual dexterity, with or without reasonable accommodation, which permits the employee to use a firearm safely and effectively, to direct people and utilize equipment required for the performance of duties.
5. Sufficient ability and strength to lift, carry, or otherwise move objects up to 50 pounds for varying distances.
Nature of “At-Will” Employment: The person employed serves solely at the pleasure of the Judge. “AT WILL” positions can be terminated or modified without cause with no recourse, totally upon the discretion of the Judge and/or her designee(s).
The person selected will undergo a background investigation, drug screen and be subject to random drug testing during employment.
