What are the responsibilities and job description for the Police Cadet position at City of Fairfax?
Applications are now being accepted for Temporary Police Cadet positions in the City of Fairfax Police Department.
Any applicant for the Police Cadet program must be between 18-21 years of age and have an interest in pursuing a career with the City of Fairfax Police Department or other law enforcement agencies. The main purpose of this program is to assist recruiting and developing individuals into eligible candidates for the position of police officer. All Police Cadets will age-out of the program after their 21st birthday.
Police cadets shall manage their conduct, both on and off duty according to the standards provided by the City of Fairfax Human Resources Office and the City of Fairfax Police Department. Police Cadets will adhere to all department directives as non-sworn employees.
This job/class works under close supervision according to set procedures.
The hiring process consists of the following:
Application/Pre-Screening Questions/Personal History Statement submission, Written Test, Initial Interview, Panel Interview, Conditional Job Offer, Background Investigation, Polygraph Testing, Psychological Testing, Chief’s Interview and a Job-Related Medical Examination/Stress Test, Final Approval/Job Offer.
The written test will be administered to each applicant on an individual basis prior to the Initial Interview. A scheduling letter will be sent via email that will include the date, time, and location of the written test and interview.

Cadets will be assigned to the Support Operations Division/Personnel Development Section. However, temporary assignments will be made based on staffing and agency needs. Factors such as staffing and agency needs may require the SOD supervisor to alter the timeline of assignments.
Police Cadets may work temporary assignments in any division and be exposed to the following.
Support Operations Division-Investigative techniques, Crime Scene Processing, Firearms instruction, Training.
Administrative Services Division-Emergency Communication Center, Property and Evidence.
Community Services Division- Special Events, Animal Control.
Patrol- Ride-A-Long Program, Patrol Techniques, Police Vehicle Operations, School Crossings, Parking Enforcement.
Professional Standards -General Orders, Standard Operating Procedures.
Under no circumstances are cadets authorized to perform law enforcement specific duties of a sworn officer.

Requires High School Diploma or GED equivalent.
Must be a United States citizen eligible for employment.
Must have never committed, been involved in, or been convicted of a felony.
Work flexible hours that may include days, nights, weekends and holidays based on the need of the agency.
Position is considered Temporary and will not be able to work twelve months consecutively.
Permitted to work up to 1559 hours in a fiscal year and not more than 40 hours per week.
