The City of Everett is accepting applications on an Open/Competitive basis for the Civil Service examination process for a FLEET MAINTENANCE SUPERVISOR.
About the Job:
Under the direction of the Vehicle Maintenance Manager or their designee, this is supervisory work with the responsibility of supervising employees engaged in the repair and maintenance of City-owned automotive, construction, transit, specialized equipment, electric vehicles (EV), and fuel island equipment.
Responsibilities include ensuring conformity to uniform practices and policies relating to vehicle and equipment service and repair. The work includes planning, supervising work, and ensuring the quality and technical correctness of tasks performed by subordinates. Employees in this class support departmental goals and objectives to ensure that the customers are provided with the best possible service at a competitive cost with minimal service interruptions. The work is usually performed with considerable independence, with periodic review by superiors for results obtained, work methods, and adherence to federal, state, city and departmental regulations and policies.

MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
- Requires graduation from high school or equivalent.
- A minimum of five (5) years journey-level experience in the full range of maintenance and repair of automotive, heavy-duty vehicle, construction equipment, and electric vehicles. Direct experience in the maintenance of City of Everett equipment is preferred.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS OR CERTIFICATIONS
- Possession of, or the ability to obtain within one (1) year of employment and maintain thereafter, valid L2, L3, A5, A6, T4, and T6 Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certifications.
- Possession of a valid Washington State Driver License and the ability to maintain for the duration of employment.
- Possession of a Washington State Commercial Driver License (CDL) and the ability to maintain for the duration of employment.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS/WORKING CONDITIONS
- Perform work requiring sustained lifting, bending, climbing, standing, and walking often on concrete surfaces; exert up to 100 pounds of force occasionally and/or move up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up 20 pounds of forces constantly to move objects; working in awkward positions and in cramped quarters; kneeling, crouching, and crawling; reaching, handling, fingering, and grasping requiring fine finger manipulations using both hands and arms; use of speech, hearing, sight feeling and sense of smell; and, eye/foot coordination.
- The work can be performed outside under adverse weather conditions, also exposed to dampness, dust, dirt, rain, sleet, snow, and heat. The work may also be performed on road service calls and/or in inclement weather.
- This classification is subject to the City of Everett’s random drug and alcohol testing, per federal Department of Transportation regulations.
- Respond to emergency calls, work variable shifts including nights and weekends.

EXAMINATION STEPS
- There will be a pre-screening of all applications.
- Responses to the supplemental questionnaire will be individually reviewed and evaluated (weighted 20%).
- Top-scoring applicants will be called to an oral board examination (weighted 70%), tentatively scheduled for the week of December 15, 2025
- All vacancies in this job class will be filled from the ranked Civil Service register established from the examination process for 12 months.
IMPORTANT NOTES
- A passing grade of 70.00 or higher is required on all parts of the screening process for placement on the ranked Civil Service eligible register.
- The examination process is designed to sample and measure the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities.
- Applicants claiming veterans’ preference points in accordance with RCW 41.04.010 as amended and meeting eligibility criteria must submit form DD214, or its equivalent or successor discharge paperwork, that characterizes his or her service as qualifying discharge as defined in RCW 73.04.005.
- Must have passed probation on an initial civil service job classification.
- Any position requiring a CDL, or the performance of a safety sensitive function will be subject to the City of Everett’s random Drug and Alcohol Policy, per Federal DOT regulations.
- Extensive background checks will be conducted.
- Hiring offers are contingent upon successful completion of a City-paid medical evaluation and possible drug screen.
- New hires begin employment at the first step of the salary range.
