The City of Everett is accepting applications on an open/competitive basis for the Civil Service examination process for EQUIPMENT SERVICE WORKER in the City's Motor Vehicle Division. There is current vacancy on the night shift (4:00PM-12:30AM).

About The Job

Employees in this classification perform support work in servicing, repairing, maintaining, safety inspecting, and cleaning various forms of automotive, truck, and heavy equipment.

The work includes performing many routine tasks of a mechanical nature in servicing automotive, truck, and heavy equipment with lubricants, fuels (gasoline, diesel, propane, and electricity), accessories, and parts. Employees in this class are required to make mechanical repairs and are responsible for the general cleaning work in the garage. Additional duties include performing safety inspections when vehicles are scheduled for servicing. Employees in this class are expected to possess basic automotive, servicing, and maintenance skills. Specific assignments are generally received orally, and the work is performed under the supervision of the shift supervisor or, when assigned, to an Equipment Mechanic. More repetitive servicing duties are done independently in accordance with standard methods. The work is reviewed by the shift supervisor and/or the Vehicle Maintenance Manager via oral or written reports, and direct observation of work completed. This classification is not required to make diagnostic evaluations or valve adjustments.

Eligibility Requirements

  • Requires a minimum of one (1) year experience servicing, making simple mechanical repairs, lubricating, changing, replacing tires, and performing minor tune-ups on automotive and truck equipment.

Special Requirements Or Certifications

  • Submission to a driving/accident records check.
  • Possession of, or ability to obtain within 30 days of hire, a Washington State Driver License.
  • Successful completion of required automotive and truck Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) tests (A5 and T4 brakes) within one (1) year of employment.
  • Possession of, or ability to obtain a valid Washington Commercial Driver License (CDL) with the necessary required endorsements as prescribed by law, within 90 days of hire.
  • Obtain a City forklift certification within six (6) months of hire.

EXAMINATION STEPS

  • Supplemental Questionnaire is part of the application (weighed 30%). Answers must be detailed and will be blind rated.
  • Top-scoring applicants will be called to an oral interview (weighted 70%), tentatively scheduled during week of December 16th.
  • All vacancies in this job class will be filled from the ranked Civil Service register established from the examination process for 12 months.

IMPORTANT NOTES

  • A passing grade of 70.00 or higher is required on all parts of the screening process for placement on the ranked Civil Service eligible register.
  • The examination process is designed to sample and measure the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities.
  • Applicants claiming veterans' preference points in accordance with RCW 41.04.010 as amended and meeting eligibility criteria must submit form DD214, or its equivalent or successor discharge paperwork, that characterizes his or her service as qualifying discharge as defined in RCW 73.04.005.
  • Extensive background checks will be conducted.
  • Hiring offers are contingent upon successful completion of a City-paid pre-employment physical.
  • This job classification is represented by Everett Municipal Employees Local 113, AFSCME.
  • New hires begin employment at the first step of the salary range.

The City of Everett provides a comprehensive health benefits package to eligible members consisting of the following:

  • Kaiser Permanente CORE HMO or HMA Self-insured Medical Plan
  • Dental Plan 12 through AFCME Council 2 Trust
  • Vision insurance through Vision Service Plan (VSP).
  • Life Insurance for the employee in the amount of 1x the annual salary
  • Accidental Death and Dismemberment Policy

Benefits for the eligible employee and eligible dependents begins the first month following the employee's hire date (i.e. if hired in March, benefits start April 1st.) Premiums for Delta Dental and VSP Vision are paid by the City on behalf of the employee for single or family coverage. Premiums for HMA Medical and Kaiser Medical Coverage are shared by the employee. Premiums for Life, and Accidental Death & Dismemberment coverage on behalf of the employee are paid by the City.

An additional life insurance benefit is available through a Voluntary Life insurance program for the employee, spouse and children. The employee pays the premiums for this benefit.

It is mandatory that both the City and the employee pay into the Department of Retirement Systems for Washington State.

Three voluntary Deferred Compensation programs are available for employee participation.

A Flexible Spending Plan is available that allows you to make pre-tax contributions for Health Care reimbursement and/or Dependent Care reimbursement for eligible expenses not covered by medical insurance.

The Employee Assistance Program EAP is provided free of charge to eligible employees and family members.
