About The Job
Employees in this classification perform support work in servicing, repairing, maintaining, safety inspecting, and cleaning various forms of automotive, truck, and heavy equipment.
The work includes performing many routine tasks of a mechanical nature in servicing automotive, truck, and heavy equipment with lubricants, fuels (gasoline, diesel, propane, and electricity), accessories, and parts. Employees in this class are required to make mechanical repairs and are responsible for the general cleaning work in the garage. Additional duties include performing safety inspections when vehicles are scheduled for servicing. Employees in this class are expected to possess basic automotive, servicing, and maintenance skills. Specific assignments are generally received orally, and the work is performed under the supervision of the shift supervisor or, when assigned, to an Equipment Mechanic. More repetitive servicing duties are done independently in accordance with standard methods. The work is reviewed by the shift supervisor and/or the Vehicle Maintenance Manager via oral or written reports, and direct observation of work completed. This classification is not required to make diagnostic evaluations or valve adjustments.

Eligibility Requirements
- Requires a minimum of one (1) year experience servicing, making simple mechanical repairs, lubricating, changing, replacing tires, and performing minor tune-ups on automotive and truck equipment.
- Submission to a driving/accident records check.
- Possession of, or ability to obtain within 30 days of hire, a Washington State Driver License.
- Successful completion of required automotive and truck Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) tests (A5 and T4 brakes) within one (1) year of employment.
- Possession of, or ability to obtain a valid Washington Commercial Driver License (CDL) with the necessary required endorsements as prescribed by law, within 90 days of hire.
- Obtain a City forklift certification within six (6) months of hire.

- A passing grade of 70.00 or higher is required on all parts of the screening process for placement on the ranked Civil Service eligible register.
- The examination process is designed to sample and measure the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities.
