NATURE OF WORK: The Parks Irrigation Supervisor is under general supervision serving as a lead worker who manages, operates, and maintains the City of Evans’ parks irrigation systems through controller programming, systems monitoring, field adjustments, field installation, and field repairs. The Parks Irrigation Supervisor may also supervise assigned parks maintenance staff responsible for irrigation repair work.

  • Operates and manages large-scale, complex irrigation systems citywide, with a focus on plant health and water conservation through optimal programming and system maintenance.
  • Applies knowledge of basic botany and plant life cycles for turf, trees, shrubs, perennials and related vegetation.
  • Operates a wide variety of motorized equipment, including pickup trucks, dump trucks, skid steers, small engine equipment, trenchers, air compressors, snowplows, mowers, mini excavators, and more.
  • Participates in snow removal operations.
  • Performs winterization of complex irrigation systems using compressed air.
  • Maintains and organizes an adequate inventory of repair parts, manages irrigation vehicles, and oversees staff resources.
  • Possesses experience with major brands of irrigation products including Rainbird, Hunter, Baseline, Toro, Weather Matic, and others.
  • Repairs irrigation issues- including mainline breaks, broken heads, nozzle repair, and wiring/electrical problems-and directs staff in repair activities.
  • Diagnoses, locates, and repairs complex 2-wire system electrical issues and faults.
  • Programs irrigation controllers to optimize plant health while accommodating park activities and use.
  • Actively pursues professional development to remain current with emerging technologies. May serve as Acting Parks Superintendent during absences. 
  • Documents and organizes field data.
  • Applies advanced knowledge of field diagnostics and repair techniques related to landscape irrigation.
  • Supervises assigned employees  or teams performing irrigation work.
  • Assists with any park-related tasks, including mowing, as needed.
  • Assists with City special events and emergencies as required.
  • Provides support in managing the Parks Department as needed.
  • Ensures assigned staff prioritize safety every day.
  • Assists with landscape plan reviews for parks and commercial development projects related to irrigation systems.
  • Serves on-call as required: responds to emergencies and performs after- hours work. May work a varied schedule and/or shift.
  • Demonstrates advanced understanding of blueprints and plan scaling.
  • Applies knowledge of trench safety, including protective methods and tools.
  • Knowledge of irrigation design and operational principles.
  • Knowledge of GIS systems to locate and manage parks assets.
  • Knowledge of turf management principles.
  • Knowledge of low voltage electrical systems.
  • Knowledge of temporary traffic control methods and safely conducts work within rights-of-ways(ROWs) in compliance with standards.
  • Knowledge of basic plumbing.
  • Knowledge of cross-contamination risks and prevention practices.
  • Knowledge of operating potable and non-potable pumping systems.
  • Basic understanding of pesticides (primarily herbicides) and their proper application in turf management. 
  • Knowledge of using wire locators / tracers.
  • Knowledge of electrical multimeter use.
  • Knowledge of fault locators.
  • Ability to work in confined spaces.
  • Ability to read and interpret landscape and irrigation plans.

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, AND LICENSURE

Required:

  • High School diploma or equivalent; equivalent combinations of education and experience may be considered.
  • Four (4) years of professional experience in repairing, managing, installing, and operating complex commercial or governmental landscape irrigation systems.
  • Valid Colorado Driver’s License or ability to obtain within six months of hire.
  • Ability to possess First Aid and CPR Certification within 60 days of hire.
  • Ability to possess Confined Space Certification within 60 days of hire.
  • Ability to possess Flagger Certification within 60 days of hire.

 

Preferred:

  • Certified Irrigation Auditor.
  • Certified Irrigation Repair Technician.
  • Backflow Repair and Maintenance Certification.
  • Experience working with Hydropoint Baseline.
  • Experience working operating VFD irrigation pump systems.
  • Experience in public/municipal sector.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to exercise mental and visual concentration, listen, talk, stand, reach, twist, demonstrate manual dexterity, walk on level, uneven and slippery terrain, turn, kneel, bend, stoop, squat, balance, crouch, crawl, grasp, pinch, and making repetitive hand movement in the performance of daily duties. The employee will need to lift, carry, and push tools, equipment and supplies weighing up to 85 pounds on an occasional basis and 20 to 50 pounds on a frequent basis. The employee will need to climb ladders, work in Confined Spaces, use power equipment/tools that produce vibration and noise, and work in Work Zones with moderate to heavy traffic. The employee regularly works in all outside weather conditions near moving equipment in areas with elevated noise levels and where chemicals may be utilized.
