At the time of posting, we are recruiting for one active vacancy. An additional three vacancies are expected to open on April 1, 2026. Candidate Physical Ability Testing will be held on/around January 9, 2026 for candidates who meet minimum qualifications and furnish all required documentation within the deadline provided.
The City of Eustis is seeking a trustworthy, responsible individual who, under general direction, performs responsible work involving the prevention and suppression of fires. The employee is responsible for responding to emergency situations and assisting in the control and resolution of the situation.
The employee works within the scope of established Fire Department rules, regulations and procedures; however, is expected to exercise considerable independent judgment and initiative, in emergency situations.
Examples of Machines, Tools and Equipment Used: Fire equipment and apparatus; emergency fire vehicles; communications radio; various maintenance and custodial tools; general office equipment
Supervision Received: Firefighter/Engineer, Senior Engineer, Fire Lieutenant, Senior Engineer (on occasion, Acting Senior Engineer)
Knowledge of firefighting techniques and procedures; knowledge of the streets, roads and geography of the city; knowledge of first-aid principles and procedures; knowledge of the operation and maintenance of various types of firefighting apparatus.
Ability to carry out assignments with minimal instructions; Ability to react quickly and calmly in emergency situations; ability to establish and maintain an effective working relationship with co-workers and the general public; ability to communicate effectively, verbally and in writing; ability to perform prolonged and arduous work under adverse conditions; ability to work rotating shifts, including nights, weekends and holidays; ability to work on-call, as required, including nights, weekends and holidays
Skill in the operation and maintenance of fire equipment and apparatus.
Minimum Qualifications:
High School Diploma or recognized equivalent; Florida State Firefighters Minimum Standards Certificate or Certificate of Compliance; Florida Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) Certification; preferred State Certified Paramedic; Valid Florida Class E Driver's License with an acceptable driving record is required.
Education to be completed within two (2) years of employment with Fire Department:
Successful completion of the following courses recommended:

Moderately heavy work for a considerable part of working time. Requires walking & standing; lifting 50 pounds; running, jumping/leaping, climbing, stooping, reaching, bending, carrying/pushing/pulling 125 pounds; good finger/hand dexterity and hand/eye coordination; good eyesight (20/40 corrected binocular vision; no worse than 20/100 uncorrected binocular vision), hearing and speech; regular driving and operation of assigned equipment.
Employee must be physically able to work in adverse environmental conditions (heat, cold, rain, etc.) for long periods, hazardous conditions and close/confined spaces; Must be able to wear protective clothing and equipment up to 60 pounds and work in extremely high temperatures and toxic atmospheres.
Salary Information:
Starting base salary for Firefighter is $51,517.36 annually, based upon 2912 hours (FLSA hours up to additional $1,373.93 annually).
Starting base salary for Firefighter/Medic is $63,665.35 annually, based upon 2912 hours (FLSA hours up to additional $1,705.32 annually).

- Operates pumps and hydrants;
- Extinguishes fires;
- Assists in rescue operations;
- Administers first-aid to injured or afflicted persons;
- Performs salvage operations;
- Tests fire hydrants;
- Maintains and checks fire equipment for repairs;
- Assists in minor repairs and maintenance of equipment;
- Dispatches and receives calls;
- Conducts surveys and pre-planning in investigations, as required;
- Over-sees and assists with the training of firefighters who are on probation;
- Assists with fire inspections;
- Represents Fire Department as a speaker for civic, educational or other interested groups;
- Attends training sessions in firefighting and first aid;
- Prepares and submits routine records and reports;
- Assists in all departmental activities in preparation for a major emergency, such as a hurricane or other storm or disaster; assists with aftermath activities of such disaster, including inspection, clean up, disaster relief, etc.
- Answers phone, providing information and assisting the public;
- Performs routine clerical duties;
- Performs custodial and maintenance duties at the station;
- Performs other related duties as required.
