Examples of Machines, Tools and Equipment Used: All portable tools related to the building crafts including: pneumatic hand tools such as nail guns, staplers, etc.; electrical hand tools such as saws, drills, grinders, sanders, routers, etc.; stationary power tools such as radial saws, table saws, drill press, etc.; ladders, scaffolding; trucks; bucket trucks.
Supervision Received: Building Maintenance Foreman
Keeps time and material records;
- Constructs, alters, maintains, and repairs municipal buildings and structures;
- Performs rough framing and paneling;
- Hangs doors/ windows/cabinets;
- Finishes trim;
- Plasters and paints interior/exterior of buildings;
- Installs electrical wiring;
- Installs new electrical systems;
- Installs computer wiring;
- Maintains and repairs existing electrical systems;
- Maintains and repairs electrical motors of air conditioning systems;
- Installs and maintains plumbing system;
- Pours concrete driveways and walkways;
- Lays concrete block; installs and repairs dry wall;
- Estimates time and materials;
- Inspects lumber and other materials for grade and quality;
- Inspects City buildings, structures and equipment and performs troubleshooting;
- Reads and prepares blueprints, sketches and plans;
- Makes recommendations on building construction and method of repair;
- Maintains records of materials and activities;
- Assists the City in the preparation for and aftermath of a major emergency such as a hurricane or other storm or disaster, as needed;
- Works on-call, as needed, during emergency situations such as hurricanes, severe weather, etc.;
- Performs other related duties as required.
Thorough knowledge of standard practices, methods, tools and materials of the construction trade; knowledge of the qualities and grades of lumber, plumbing, electrical and other materials; knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions.
Ability to make estimates of time and materials; ability to establish and maintain good working relationships with city employees and the general public; ability to carry out assignments with minimum instructions; ability to read and write English; ability to drive a vehicle; ability to work on-call, if required, including nights, weekends and holidays; ability to remain at a city work shelter, before, during and after a hurricane or other storm or disaster, if asked
Skill in the use of tools, materials and equipment common to the trade.
Minimum Qualifications:
High School Diploma or recognized equivalent; supplemented by three (3) years experience in building trades. Valid Florida Class B Commercial Driver's License with an acceptable driving record required. Other related experience may be considered.
Salary Information:
$19.05 per hour EXCELLENT benefits (Note: See Benefits Tab for more information). Applicants should expect a starting salary of $19.05 per hour. Following a thorough background investigation including a criminal history and driver’s license check, the candidate will be given a conditional offer of employment. The final candidate will be required to pass a drug test and medical exam.

Physical Demands:This is moderate to heavy work for a considerable part of the working time. Requires frequent walking; frequent standing, climbing, stooping, reaching, bending; lifting 50 pounds, carrying/ pushing/pulling 50 pounds; good finger/hand dexterity and hand/eye coordination; good eyesight, hearing and speech; working in adverse environmental conditions (heat, cold, rain, etc.) for long periods of time; regular driving of vehicle.
Working Hours:
Generally, Monday through Friday 7:00 am to 4:00 pm.
