General Statement of Duties

The Recreation Division at the City of Eugene is recruiting for multiple Aquatics Recreation Activity Employees (RAE).


The Aquatic's Program at the City of Eugene provides accessible municipal aquatic environments for our community. Aquatics program staff are responsible for maintaining safe practices and conditions in this environment, including supervision of aquatic activities and the participants involved. We are seeking energetic, safety and service-minded individuals to add to our team. Classification: Recreation Activity Employee

Salary: $22.99 - $28.64 hourly

The City of Eugene determines starting pay within the range based on relevant education and experience as provided by the applicant in their application materials. This process is consistent with the Oregon Equal Pay Act (OEPA).

Work Location: Amazon Pool, Echo Hollow Pool or Sheldon Pool

Schedule: 32 hours per week, per business need

Examples of Duties Performed - Duties may include but are not limited to the following

  • Plans and implements programs; and provides feedback, leadership, coaching, training, and instruction for employees and volunteers.
  • Interacts with patrons by responding to inquiries, concerns, and questions which may include difficult conversations with patrons; answers telephone and takes messages.
  • Supports administrative staff with registration, scheduling, and front desk duties.
  • Assists staff with training; attends staff meeting; and supports staff in maintaining safe facility operations.
  • Provides feedback for program improvement; assists in purchasing equipment and providing equipment evaluation.
  • Accesses computer for readily available information; may perform routine data entry to update records; and assists with updating marketing information.
  • Enforces safety rules and regulations; responds to and immediately reports accidents and completes accident forms as required.
  • Gathers, and updates information, including program registrations, patron evaluations, and timesheets; and maintain accurate records.
  • Actively supports and respects diversity in the workplace.
  • Performs related and other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

Experience

Two years of experience in recreation program planning, instructing, supervising and/or coordinating in a recreation or pool facility, a certified childcare facility, or youth center.

Education

High school diploma or G.E.D. equivalent.

Background

Must pass a background check.

Certifications

  • American Red Cross Oxygen Administration for the Professional Rescuer Certification
  • Preventing Disease Transmission Certification (or equivalent Blood Borne Pathogens certification)
  • American Red Cross Lifeguard certification.

The ideal candidate will have the following knowledge, skills, and abilities

Knowledge

  • General emergency response, CPR, and First Aid.
  • Customer service practices.
  • Program planning principles and procedures.
  • Group behavior management techniques.
  • Lifeguarding procedures.

Abilities

  • Plan, organize and administer a recreation program; evaluate program needs; coordinate multiple projects and activities, and provide direction.
  • Teach and lead groups of various ages and ability levels depending upon the area of assignment.
  • Work cooperatively with others and develop effective working relationships with co-workers and patrons.
  • Communicate effectively and tactfully, both orally and in writing with people from diverse backgrounds.
  • Prioritize, plan, assign, train and lead the work of temporary employees and volunteers.
  • Demonstrate excellent customer service skills.
  • Provide a safe and inclusive environment for participants.
  • Respond to and resolve questions and concerns from the public.
  • Understand and follow verbal and written instructions and perform tasks independently.
  • Perform basic keyboarding, word processing, and data entry.
  • Work with accuracy and attention to detail while meeting deadlines.
  • Work a variety of shifts, including weekends and holidays.
  • Meet the physical requirements necessary to perform the assigned duties safely and effectively.

Supplemental Information

Working Conditions

Work in this classification is generally performed in an aquatics environment. May be required to sit and stand for extended periods. May be required to lift or move equipment and supplies. May be required to lift up to 25 pounds frequently and up to 50 pounds occasionally. Possible physical exposures to outdoor weather, noise, water, and chemicals at facility. May be exposed to stressful emergency situations.

Bilingual Pay Benefit

Per the AFSCME contract, the City shall pay an employee an additional 5% for a required intermediate or advanced level competency. To qualify for bilingual pay, the employee must have demonstrated fluency in the required language and successfully pass a fluency examination administered by the City's Employee Resource Center division.

Eligibility List

This posting may also be used to establish an eligibility list of applicants for future vacancies. Candidates that are placed on the eligibility list will be notified via email which will include the duration of the list and how notification of call up will occur.

What to Expect from our Selection Process

Applicants are screened based upon their relevant knowledge, abilities, skills, experience, and training. The selection process varies according to the position and can include such things as screening of supplemental questionnaires, written or skill tests, ability or fitness tests, interviews, and assessment processes. In addition, background investigations and records checks may be required. Some positions also require applicants to have a psychological evaluation and/or physical examination and a drug test prior to employment. Marijuana use is evaluated consistent with current state law regulations. PLEASE NOTE: Once the posting closes, the process can take 4-6 weeks to complete.
