MAJOR DUTIES
- Operates a variety of equipment, including tractor, backhoe, bulldozer, motor grader, excavator, front-end loader, flusher, auger, etc.
- Drives dump truck, garbage truck, Knuckleboom, fuel truck, and pickup trucks.
- Maintains assigned vehicles and equipment; performs pre- and post-trip vehicle inspections.
- Transports materials to and from work sites.
- Flags traffic and installs traffic control devices at work sites.
- Repairs and maintains city streets; installs storm drains, constructs storm boxes, performs masonry and concrete finishing duties.
- Installs, repairs and maintains city sewer lines, laterals, and right-of-way; applies pesticides to control weeds.
- Collects solid waste.
- Directs the work of an assigned crew of personnel in the field; ensures compliance with safety guidelines.
- Responds to after-hours emergencies.
- Performs related duties.
SUPERVISORY CONTROLS
Departmental Managers assign work in terms of general instructions. The supervisor spot-checks completed work for compliance with procedures, accuracy, and the nature and propriety of the final results.
GUIDELINES
Guidelines include traffic laws, work safety policies, city codes, and city and department policies and procedures. These guidelines are generally clear and specific but may require some interpretation in application.

SUPERVISORY AND MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITY
This position has functional supervision over Maintenance/Construction Workers and Refuse Workers as assigned.
- Knowledge of the techniques, equipment, and supplies used in various maintenance and construction operations.
- Knowledge of city and departmental safety policies and procedures.
- Knowledge of the geography of the city, including street names and locations.
- Skill in the operation of assigned vehicles, trucks, and heavy equipment.
- Skill in the analysis of problems and the development and implementation of solutions.
- Skill in the use of hand and power tools.
- Skill in oral and written communication.
- Knowledge and level of competency commonly associated with completion of specialized training in the field of work, in addition to basic skills typically associated with a high school education.
- Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position, usually associated with the completion of an apprenticeship/internship or having had a similar position for one to two years.
- Possession of a valid driver’s license.
- Possession of a valid Class B commercial driver’s license.
