Job Title: Maintenance Worker I

JOB SUMMARY
The job duties of the Maintenance Worker I include but are not limited to performing a variety of semi-skilled and skilled tasks in the re-construction, maintenance and repair of public facilities including the areas of streets, parks, storm water, and sewer; and to provide responsive, courteous, and efficient service to City residents and the general public.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS: Maintenance Worker I
This is the entry level class in the Maintenance Worker series, and is distinguished from the

Maintenance Worker II by the performance of less than the full range of duties assigned to the higher level position. This class is typically used as an entry level position in that employees may have only limited or no directly related work experience. Incumbents work under immediate supervision while learning job tasks, including the operation of applicable pieces of equipment and machinery. Positions at this level may provide minor supervision with seasonal employees.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The duties described below are indicative of what the Maintenance Worker I might be asked to perform. This is not an exhaustive list of job responsibilities and therefore other duties may be assigned:

Essential General Functions:

  • Prepare work records including time spent and materials used.
  • Perform a variety of semi-skilled and skilled maintenance duties.
  • Participate in snow removal operations, sometimes requiring modified hours including overnight and early morning shifts
  • Assist in setting up for community events and functions

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: Maintenance Worker I

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required at the time of hire or for the continuation of employment.

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Six (6) months experience in general maintenance preferred but not required.

SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Ability to maintain a professional demeanor when dealing with the public.
  • Ability to take control of situations.
  • Ability to perform heavy manual labor.

EQUIPMENT KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED

  • Ability to operate various types of office equipment – standard office equipment, computer and related software.
  • Ability to operate various types of general construction tools and equipment such as trucks, tractors, sweepers, snow plow, skid-steer loaders, and mowers.
  • Other equipment may be required.

LANGUAGE SKILLS

  • Ability to communicate effectively with other members of the team, supervisor, and the public.
  • Ability to communicate in both written and verbal form.
  • Ability to interpret and implement City policies and procedures; written instructions, general correspondence; Federal, State, City, and local regulations;

MSDS sheets, safety manuals; and warning labels.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

  • Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations.

REASONING ABILITY

  • Ability to define problems and deal with a variety of situations.
  • Ability to think quickly, maintain self-control, and adapt to stressful situations.
  • Ability to use good judgment and effectively solve problems.

PHYSICAL AND WORK ENVIRONMENT

Physical Environment:

  • The duties of this job include physical activities such as stooping, kneeling, standing, reaching, walking, lifting and/or move (up to 100 pounds), grasping, talking, hearing/listening, seeing/observing, and repetitive motions.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close, distance and peripheral vision; depth perception; and the ability to adjust focus.

Work Environment:

  • Primarily works in an outdoor setting in various, including adverse, weather conditions.
  • Must be able to respond to afterhours call-backs within 30 minutes; prepare for and confront emergency conditions as necessary to maintain efficient and effective City services.

Job Types: Full-time, Part-time

Pay: $16.87 - $24.06 per hour
