Job Description
Enjoy a team atmosphere while working on a wide variety of mechanical equipment! We are currently hiring a Mechanic position in the Fleet Division of the Community Services Department. This position performs skilled mechanical work in the maintenance, servicing, and repair of automotive, truck, and other mechanical equipment, including preventive maintenance, and general and major overhaul work on equipment with diesel and gasoline engines. Duties include repairing and maintaining mechanical devices such as transmissions, clutches, hydraulic lifts, generators, differentials, starters, and alternators; performing motor tune-ups and electrical repairs; using a computer to process work orders; and much more!

Requirements:
  • Possess and maintain a valid driver's license
  • Possess or obtain (within 6 months of hire) and maintain a valid Wisconsin Class B CDL with no air brake restrictions
  • High School Diploma or equivalent (GED, etc.)
  • Furnish a complete set of hand tools

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Two years of experience or an associate degree in automotive repair and maintenance, heavy duty diesel mechanic, or a related field
  • ASE Master Truck or Automotive Technician certification in diesel/gasoline engines

JOB DESCRIPTION

POSITION SCOPE
Under direct supervision, performs skilled mechanical work at the apprentice level in the maintenance, servicing, and repair of automotive, truck, and other mechanical equipment. This position utilizes a thorough working knowledge of the methods, materials, tools, and standard practices involved in performing skilled mechanical work on a variety of motorized vehicles and mechanical equipment. This position must have a working knowledge of internal combustion engines, hazards, and safety precautions of the trade and an ability to understand and carry out effectively, oral and written instructions. The position must furnish a complete set of hand tools.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Perform general overhaul and preventative maintenance work on mechanical equipment including but not limited to: vans, automobiles, light and heavy trucks, road maintenance equipment, cemetery and parks turf maintenance equipment, air compressors, chain saws, snow removal equipment, tractors, water pumps, generators, trailers, and other city owned equipment.
Repair and maintain mechanical devices such as transmissions, clutches, hydraulic lifts, generators, differentials, starters, and alternators.
Perform motor tune-ups and electrical repairs such as wiring, emergency lighting, WiMax, AVL/GPS, and two-way radio equipment.
Perform stick and wire feed weld, acetylene weld and braze, plus metal fabrication.
Operate a laptop computer in order to process work orders using the City's fleet management program and diagnose both gasoline and diesel engine fuel management systems, vehicle body management systems, and snow and ice control equipment.
Perform general maintenance work on non-mechanical devices such as wheels, tires, and minor chassis and body parts. Change and charge batteries. Repair frames.
Operate all types of equipment used by the City.
NON-ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Perform related duties as required.
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE/CERTIFICATIONS
Must possess or obtain (within 30 days of hire) and maintain a valid Wisconsin driver's license.
Must possess or obtain (within 6 months of hire) and maintain a valid Wisconsin Class B CDL with no air brake restrictions.
Must furnish a complete set of hand tools.
High School Diploma or equivalent (GED, etc.) is required. Two years of experience or an associate degree in automotive repair and maintenance, heavy duty diesel mechanic, or a related field is preferred.
ASE Master Truck or Automotive Technician certification in diesel/gasoline engines is preferred.

WORK ENVIRONMENT
This position is classified at the Very Heavy level, as defined by the U.S. Department of Labor in the Dictionary of Occupations Titles.

Job consists of a combination of walking, stooping/bending, twisting, reaching, pulling, pushing, climbing, and handling. There will be exposure to heat, cold, wet, slippery and high conditions. In addition, there will be exposure to dust, noise and chemicals. Lift on occasion 50 to 100 lbs., frequently 25 to 50 lbs., &/or constantly 10 to 20 lbs. WORK HOURS
Regular work hours are typically Monday - Friday, 7:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Typical summer work hours are on a 4-day per week 10 hours per day work schedule. Start times and end of shift times may vary.

LABOR AND TRADES EMPLOYEES

(Effective January 1, 2026)

Benefits listed are for full-time employees. Regular part-time employee benefits are prorated based on the budgeted hours of the position except for vacation which is prorated based on the number of hours actually worked. Health Insurance benefits for employee working thirty hours or more per week shall not be prorated.

Paid Holidays

New Year's Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day, day after Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, and Christmas Day.

Holiday Pay for Shift Workers at Water Plant

Utility Operator I's who are scheduled and work these holidays will be paid at 1.5 times their regular straight time hourly rate.

Floating Holidays

Three floating holidays to be taken at the employee's discretion with supervisory approval each year, except as noted below. Employees hired January 1 - June 30 are entitled to three floating holidays during the first year of hire. Employees hired July 1 - December 31 are entitled to one and one-half floating holidays during the first year. Employees terminating prior to July 1 are entitled to one and one-half floating holidays. Floating holidays not used within the calendar year will be forfeited.

Sick Leave

One day per month accruable to 120 days.

Wisconsin Retirement System

As required by state law, the City and the employee are each required to contribute into the Wisconsin Retirement System. The total contribution is 14.4% of earnings, with the City and the employee each contributing 7.2%.

Deferred Compensation Plans

Available participation in a 457 retirement savings plan offered by the City. Contributions cannot exceed the annual maximum limit allowed by the IRS.

Roth Plans

Available participation in the Roth 457 and Roth IRA retirement accounts offered by the City. Contributions cannot exceed the annual maximum limit allowed by the IRS.

Supplemental Worker's Compensation Pay

Upon the determination of eligibility, the City shall pay a regular full-time employee who is injured on the job the difference between their regular salary and their worker's compensation payments, as long as the employee is on injury leave, but not to exceed 90 days for the same injury. If an employee receives the full 90 days of injury leave and is still unable to return to work, the City Council may at its' discretion grant an extension of injury leave.

Life Insurance (Department of Employee Trust Funds)

Available participation in the Basic, Supplemental, Additional, and Spouse and Dependent life insurance program. The employee is responsible for the monthly premium amount. The amount of insurance is dependent upon the annual salary of the employee.

Active Employee Health Insurance

The City pays 85% of the cost of the health insurance premium for an active regular full-time employee.

Dental Insurance

Employee pays 100% of the monthly premium. Employees working 20 hours per week, or more are eligible.

Vision Insurance

Employee pays 100% of the monthly premium. Employees working 20 hours per week, or more are eligible.

Flexible Spending

Optional participation in a health care and/or dependent care Section 125 pre-tax reimbursement account, subject to IRS regulations. Employees working 30 hours per week, or more are eligible.

Additional Ancillary Benefits

Employees working 20 hours per week or more are eligible for short-term disability, voluntary life/accidental death and dismemberment, critical illness, accident and hospital indemnity insurances. Employee pays 100% of the monthly premium.

ADDITIONAL BENEFITS

Educational Assistance & Incentive Pay Plan

City pays for Water and Wastewater Certification fees. City may pay a portion of other tuition per the Educational Assistance Program.

If hired prior to and receiving incentive pay on December 31, 2023, employees may be eligible for incentive pay at their rate on said date and according to details of the plan for eligible regular full-time employees.

Safety Shoe Reimbursement

City provides partial reimbursement for the purchase of safety shoes per calendar year.

Safety Glasses Reimbursement

City provides partial reimbursement for the purchase of safety glasses every two years.

Tool Allowance

Mechanics shall be eligible for an annual partial tool allowance for tools purchased. A receipt must be presented and approved by the Division Head before payment will be made. The City will provide tool insurance for the mechanics, provided each mechanic furnishes the City with a complete inventory of their personal tools and keeps the inventory current. This insurance shall be afforded to the extent of and in accordance with the terms, conditions, and coverages provided in the City's standard property insurance policy with the local government property insurance fund. However, any deductibles specified in that policy will not apply.

If employment is terminated prior to one year of service, the employee will reimburse the City for any used hours on their final pay check.
