Description

The Sports Coach and/or Program Instructor are responsible for planning and leading the Durango Parks and Recreation Department’s programs, including sports and activities.

Essential Job Duties

  • Participate in pre-season staff orientation/training program.
  • Arrive at the job site at the assigned scheduled time.
  • Organize and lead special activities, enrichment and sports programs, and other recreational activities.
  • Submit lesson plans and supply requests to the Recreation Supervisor.
  • Work in cooperation with all staff to create fun, exciting programs for participants of all ages.
  • Emphasize and model good sportsmanship in sports, games and other activities.
  • Attend staff meetings and in-service training.
  • Dress appropriately when on duty. Staff shirts should be worn while on duty to ensure staff members are easily distinguishable.
  • Ensure the safety and well being of each participant by making sure all playing surfaces are free of hazards and by not putting players in potentially dangerous situations through inappropriate drills, weather conditions, or mismatched opponents.
  • Put winning in perspective and follow the Durango Parks and Recreation philosophy (have fun, equal playing time, teach sportsmanship, and teach proper fundamentals) for all youth sports programs.
  • Communicate to parents any necessary information that they would need, such as times and locations for practices, games, meets as well proper equipment needed, etc.
  • Clearly lay out all expectation for the program to both parents and participants.
  • Assist Program Coordinator/Recreation Supervisor in scheduling athletic contests and practices, and/or scheduled program activities.
  • Teach the proper techniques and fundamentals for the specific sport being coached or instructional activity.
  • Care for all equipment, supplies, records and facilities.
  • Follow-up on all department policies and procedures.

Job Qualifications

Knowledge, Skill and Ability

Knowledge Of

Operations, services, and activities of a City Parks and Recreation program.

Prior experience working with children and children’s programs.

Child development and behaviors.

Appropriate techniques for dealing with conflict resolution and disputes.

Specific sport or recreational program knowledge for which hired to coach or lead.

Developing age appropriate lesson plans.

Reasonable discipline.

Ability To

Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.

Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.

Maintain physical condition appropriate to the performance of assigned duties and responsibilities.

Maintain mental capacity that allows the capability of effectively interacting and communicating with others.

Work Environment

Indoor and outdoor recreational facilities, irregular work hours; may work in or around water and slippery surfaces.

Periods of mobility with light and heavy physical activity.

Varying periods of sun, heat and cold exposure.

Physical Activities

Ability to bend, stoop, stretch, reach, carry, grasp and turn objects;

Ability to climb stairs; and stand, sit and walk for up to 60 minutes at a time;

Acceptable verbal and conversation skills to effectively communicate with others via the phone, at meetings and to greet and assist visitors.

Minimum Qualifications

Education or Formal Training and Licenses:

Formal or informal education or training which ensures the ability to read and write at a level necessary for successful job performance.

Possession of, or ability to obtain, CPR, AED and 1 st Aid certifications.

Possession of a valid Colorado driver’s license (where applicable).

Experience

Prefer individuals who have some experience with children in an educational or recreational environment as well as knowledge of the sport or activity they are coaching or leading.
