Description

This internship offers students the opportunity to apply classroom knowledge in a professional setting while earning valuable hands-on experience in emergency communications and public safety operations. As an Emergency Communications Intern, you’ll build your resume with meaningful, real-world experience, develop and enhance practical skills in data analysis, communication, customer service, and project coordination—all while learning how the Durango Emergency Communications Center supports public safety operations and community services throughout the region.

This is a paid part-time, temporary position with an estimated 15-20 hours per week and a four-month duration. The position hours and duration may be flexible to accommodate the right candidate and may increase or decrease as necessary to match associated workload. The position may be extended to a subsequent four-month term based on the needs of the division as well as the performance and/or employment/educational plans of the hired candidate. Enrolled college students with relevant experience are encouraged to apply.

Essential Job Duties

What You’ll Do in This Role:

In this role, you’ll support day-to-day operations and special projects, including:

  • Performing data entry, formatting documents, and general administrative tasks
  • Responding to information and data requests from staff and community members
  • Supporting community outreach efforts
  • Assisting in department performance data collection and tracking
  • Assisting with event planning and coordination
  • Assisting with research projects

  • Interact with City staff and members of the public
  • Provide helpful, friendly customer service
  • Contribute ideas and solutions as part of a team

Minimum Qualifications

You Have:

  • A high school diploma or GED equivalent and are currently a currently enrolled college student or a recent college graduate.
  • Basic familiarity with computers and an interest in learning about public safety and emergency communications
