Please note: In addition to base pay listed on the job posting, this position may qualify for a Market Adjustment Supplement Pay of up to $2.65 per hour, depending on qualifications. 

Under general supervision of the Field Operations Manager, the Sewer Maintenance Lead performs and supervises a variety of skilled and semi-skilled tasks in the operation of sewer maintenance, snow and ice control and flood control equipment and in the maintenance and repair of sanitary and storm sewer systems and equipment; and performs other duties as assigned.

  • Performs and plans, supervises and evaluates the work of employees engaged in operating grader, roller, backhoe/loader, sewer jet/vac vehicle, pumps, hydraulic impact hammer, self-propelled street sweeper, front end loader, snowplow, snowgo, jet flusher, sewer television truck, aerial bucket, anti-icing unit and other trucks and vehicles in various maintenance and construction tasks
  • Supervises and instructs and inspects the work of other employees to ensure proper performance of work and repairs. Repairs or replaces curbs, catch basins, sections of concrete, manholes, or other sewer intakes.
  • Responds to internal and external questions and requests.
  • Excavates and back fills trenches with hand tools; cleans and inspects sanitary and storm sewers; loads and unloads trucks containing heavy materials; shovels asphalt/rock, sand, gravel and spreads and rakes asphalt; and operates miscellaneous manual and power tools including jack hammer, air compressor, pick, shovel, sledgehammer, grinder, drill and pipe wrench
  • Takes initiative to cross train self and others in various areas to strengthen knowledge base and provide support to other departments or divisions
  • Instructs and inspects the work of other employees to ensure the proper performance of work
  • Ensures proper safety measures are taken and utilized on the job, around the building, etc. of self and others.
  • Performs extensive snow and ice control operational duties - individually, as a team member, and as a team leader
  • Checks tires, oil, lubricants, water levels, lights and fuel in vehicles and equipment; washes, adjusts, and performs minor repair and maintenance on vehicles and equipment; and maintains time and other records
  • Consistently ensures and reinforces the proper use and compliance of safety protocols, both on and off job sites, for self and others.
  • Completes data entry in the field and the office
  • Perform other duties assigned. 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Duties require sitting, standing, walking on uneven surfaces, climbing, reaching, kneeling, bending, stooping, squatting, grasping and repetitive motions in the performance of daily duties; both near and far vision (with or without corrective device) while performing maintenance inspection of equipment; the need to lift, drag, and push vehicles, motors, engines, and other equipment and supplies weighing up to 65 pounds; acceptable hearing (with or without corrective device); safely working with power and noise-producing tools and equipment; driving a motorized vehicle.

WORKING CONDITIONS: Work is performed in all weather conditions, including wet, hot, and cold, indoors and outdoors; during a range of shifts: regular, evening and weekend shift work; and outdoors, responding to weather-related emergency operations and being on call at various times throughout the year including holidays and weekends as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: 

  • Three or more years’ experience in the operation of light, medium and heavy construction equipment;
  • Three or more years’  experience in the construction, maintenance and repair of, sanitary and storm sewer systems and equipment; 
  • Supervisory experience in the maintenance and repair of sanitary and storm sewer systems and flood control systems; 
  • Experience in the area of snow and ice control operations and equipment; 
  • Possession of a high school diploma or its equivalent; or
  • Any equivalent combination of experience and training
  • Possession of and the ability to maintain: 
    1. a valid Class A commercial driver’s license with air brakes, tanker and combination endorsements
    2. certification as a trained competent person as it applies to trenching/shoring

 PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Experience in a leadership role
  • Certification under the Iowa Water Environment Association Voluntary Certification Program, 
  • Completion of an OSHA 10 Hour Occupational Safety and Health Training Course, 
  • Completion of the National Association of Sewer Services Companies certification in pipeline assessment (PACP)

FLSA STATUS: Non-exempt

RESIDENCY REQUIREMENT: Employee shall establish their principal place of residence within fifty (50) miles of their place of employment as soon as practicable after appointment, but within two years of appointment.
