JOB SUMMARY
The person in this position is responsible for assisting in the daily operations, maintenance, and cleanliness of the City of Douglasville’s Recycling Center. Duties include sorting recyclable materials, providing customer service, assisting with baling and loading operations, maintaining equipment, and ensuring a safe and clean work environment.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Recycling
- Assists with the collection, sorting, and separation of recyclable materials including cardboard, plastics, glass, aluminum, and mixed paper.
- Loads and unloads materials from vehicles, hoppers, conveyors, or baling machines.
- Operates recycling equipment such as balers, compactors, and forklifts under supervision.
- Monitors for contamination and ensures materials are sorted correctly according to recycling standards.
- Performs light maintenance and cleaning of equipment and work areas.
- Ensures proper labeling and organization of bales and materials for shipment.
- Assists in weighing and recording bale weights and maintaining accurate load records.
- Follows all safety rules and procedures, always wearing proper personal protective equipment (PPE).
- Report any equipment malfunction, safety hazard, or maintenance issue to the supervisor immediately.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
- Ability to perform manual labor in varying weather conditions.
- Knowledge of safe work practices and ability to follow written and verbal instructions.
- Experience with recycling operations or maintenance work preferred.
- Ability to work effectively as part of a team.
- Ability to perform routine, repetitive tasks on a continuous basis;
- Ability to exert continuous physical effort including frequent bending, walking, manipulating and heavy lifting of equipment
CERTIFICATION, LICENSE AND SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
Requires a valid Georgia Driver’s License.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
The work requires heavy lifting, climbing, crawling, crouching, feeling, grasping, handling, hearing, pushing, pulling, reaching, speaking, standing for a long period of time, talking, visual activity and walking for a long period of time.
The employee frequently lifts light objects and uses tools or equipment requiring dexterity.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
- Work is performed primarily outdoors or in a warehouse setting.
- Exposure to noise, dust, and odors associated with recyclable materials.
