Job Summary
Provides general care for shelter animals, including enrichment, feeding, cleaning, exercising, monitoring, disinfecting, and grooming. With direction, may assist with vaccinations, microchipping, and medicating shelter animals. Essential Job Functions
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
Cleans and maintains animal kennels and cages and provides a clean and safe environment for the animals and citizens. This includes feeding, handling, and provision of custodial care.
Handling large and aggressive animals using various animal care and control equipment including catch poles, leashes, muzzles, traps.
Assist in giving basic shelter medical treatment to animals in shelter care.
Assist loading and unloading of animals and supplies.
Receives animals turned in by the public and Animal Control Officers while completing all proper intake procedures.
Completes and files all required paperwork and data entry into the animal services data base management system in accordance with procedures in a timely manner.
Maintains shelter property by picking up trash, organizing supplies, and other various needed maintenance.
Tracks shelter supply inventory and notifies Manager of supplies when needed.
Cross-trains with administrative staff.
Cross-train with animal control and shows willingness to assist with animal control calls as necessary.
Perform all other related duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:Knowledge of:
Knowledge of basic construction methods
Handling large and aggressive animals using various animal care and control equipment including catch poles, leashes, muzzles, traps.
Physical and behavioral characteristics of common dogs, cats, livestock, and exotic animals.
Animal care, feeding and handling.
Animal disease and prevention.
Skills:
Basic animal handling skills and comfort level needed.
Customer Service Oriented on phones and face to face
Written and verbal communication skills.
Computer Skills MS Office.
Communication with mobile apps.
Ability to:
Read and follow written directions
Administering injections to dogs, cats and wild animal is strongly preferred.
Education & Experience
Education & Experience - Education: High school diploma or GED. Continuing education or classes in zoology, animal science, grooming and bathing, care of domestic animals, animal advocacy, preferred.
Experience:
One year experience working with animals required.
Valid Texas driving license required.
Any work-related experience resulting in acceptable proficiency levels in the above Minimum Qualifications is an acceptable substitute for the above-specified education and experience requirements. Working Environment
WORKING ENVIRONMENT:The employee will be subject to:
Must be able to lift at least 50lbs continuously.
Must be able to work evening and weekends.
