Non-Smoking

The City of Delray Beach is a Non-Tobacco Workplace. Skilled and manual work operating a backhoe, loader, forklifts, bobcat, roller, dump truck, Vac-con truck and tack machine, depending on assigned department. Work is performed under general supervision.

  • Hours of work are 6:30a.m. to 3:00p.m., Monday - Friday. Punctuality and regular attendance are essential functions of this position.*

Essential Job Duties

The following duties are normal for this position. The omission of specific statements of duties does not exclude them from the classification if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment for this classification. Other duties may be required and assigned.

  • Operate backhoe, loader, forklifts, bobcat, roller, dump truck, Vac-con truck and tack machine and other construction equipment as assigned.
  • Repair water and sewer leaks or perform asphalt and concrete removal, grading, loading trucks with road material and various tasks involving heavy equipment, depending on assigned department.
  • Assist in repairing asphalt, concrete, storm pipes and other repairs as assigned.
  • Perform assigned manual labor activities.
  • Assist Crew Leader in setting up laser and/or conventional alignment grading devices.
  • Assist with other assigned tasks.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school graduate or recognized GED.
  • Two years of verifiable work experience operatimg backhoe, loader, forklifts, bobcat, roller, dump truck, Vac-con truck and tack machine and other construction equipment in a related field.

Licenses, Certifications Or Registrations

  • Must possess a valid Florida Driver's License, Class B, CDL with air brakes and tanker endorsements or obtain it within six months of the hire date, excluding Parks Maintenance Division which requires a valid Florida Driver's License

Full Performance Knowledge, Skills, Abilities And Personal Characteristics

  • Able to be on call during regular off duty hours for emergencies.
  • Knowledge of principles and methods of operating a backhoe, loader, truck and other equipment.
  • Knowledge of practices, methods and materials used in construction and maintenance in water/sewer network and streets maintenance.
  • Knowledge of rules and regulations pertaining to safety and operation of equipment.
  • Ability to make minor repairs and adjustments to equipment and detect problems with equipment.
  • Ability to perform manual work.
  • Ability to follow and understand written and oral instructions.
  • Skill in cleaning and maintaining equipment.
  • Skill in operating a truck and trailer for transporting equipment.
  • Skill in the use of hand and power tools.

It is the policy of the City of Delray Beach that persons having a CDL and participating in activities regulated by DOT are subject to drug testing and alcohol testing. The Omnibus Transportation Employee Testing Act of 1991 requires alcohol and drug testing of safety-sensitive employees in aviation, motor carriers, railroad, and mass transit industries. Provisions of this policy are based upon said Act and the relevant federal regulations applicable to the Act. As a condition of employment, The City of Delray Beach reserves the right to require all employees having a CDL and performing safety-sensitive activities regulated by DOT, to submit at any time to drug and/or alcohol testing to determine the presence of prohibited substances.

A comparable combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this position, may be substituted for the minimum qualifications.
