The Deputy Planning Director assists in directing and coordinating the activities and functions of the Planning andDevelopment Services Department. These activities include community and neighborhood planning anddevelopment, comprehensive planning, Geographic Information System (GIS) mapping, zoning, floodplain

management planning development reviews, site inspections, permitting, and coordinating with Walton CountyCode Compliance.

**Essential Job Functions**

Assists in managing the Planning Department including supervising, hiring, retaining, developing, andevaluating employees

Acts as a Walton County BCC professional advisor in matters of planning and development

Supervises review process of all development projects and reviews staff recommendations presented tovarious boards and commissions

Coordinates efforts between citizen groups, public interest groups, and the Walton County BCC in mattersconcerning land use and Walton County codes and ordinances

Serves as advisor and works with the Planning Commission and other applicable commissions, boards, andagencies

Makes presentations to the Walton County BCC in matters related to Planning and Development

Directs planning review of Developments of Regional Impact (DRI) applications and Notices of ProposedChanges (NOPC) along with consistent review of technical projects

Ensures compliance and appropriate reporting of all DRI projects

Leads professional planning staff in the development of and implementation of initiatives in all planningareas

Prepares reports of departmental activities and other reports based on research and study of departmentaloperations

Responsible for the concurrency and consistency of the Comprehensive Plan and Land Development Code

Adheres to work schedule and attendance requirements, including nights and weekends

Performs Other Work As Directed And Required
**Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities**

Knowledge of the laws, rules and regulations, policies and procedures relating to planning, growthmanagement, development, building and zoning within Walton County and the state of Florida

Knowledge of planning, community, and economic development management practices

Knowledge of chapters 125, 162, 163, 380, 489, and 553, Florida Statutes as well as other applicable lawsand regulations

Skill in motivating, training, directing, and managing personnel

Ability to maintain effective customer-oriented services

Ability to make decisions, analyze complex information, and make oral and written presentations

Ability to work evenings and other nontraditional work hours as required Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing

Ability to establish and maintain effective, courteous working relationships with public officials, peers, otherdivisions and departments, and citizens

Ability to remain calm in stressful situations and to take a teamwork approach to the job by cooperating withothers, offering to help others when needed, and considering larger organization or team goals rather thanindividual concerns

  • Minimum Qualifications

Required:**

Bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited college or university with a major in planning, publicadministration, architecture, urban design, or closely related field

Eight (8) or more years of professional experience in planning and community development

Four (4) or more years of professional experience in a management or supervisory position

Valid driver's license

Preferred
Graduate Degree from a regionally accredited college or university with a planning, public administration,architecture, urban design, or a closely related field

Certification in Planning from the American Institute of Certified Planners (AICP)

**Physical Demands and Work Environment**

The following physical activities are necessary to perform one or more essential functions of this position. Moves, lifts, carries, and places objects weighing up to 25 pounds without assistance. Work is

performed mostly in an office setting where the noise level is usually quiet. Travel between locations toeffectively address the business needs of the department.

  • This position may be required to report for work when a declaration of emergency has been declared in WaltonCounty**.
