What are the responsibilities and job description for the Engineering Technician/Utility Locator position at City of Deerfield Beach?
The purpose of this position is to provide field locations in response to utility location requests through the Sunshine 811 Website and coordinate with contractors for utility locates.
This class works under close to general supervision according to set procedures but determines how or when to complete tasks.The essential functions listed below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in this class. Management may assign additional functions related to the type of work of the class as necessary.

Unavoidable hazards refer to the job conditions that may lead to injury or health hazards even though precautions have been taken.
WORK HOURS
Monday - Friday 7:30am – 4:00pm (May be required to work nights, weekends and holidays to meet the business needs of the Cit).

- Manages and updates City records with respect to easement, rights-of-way, water and sewer, as-builts.
- Maintains filing system and database of data collected in the field on existing utilities.
- Disseminates engineering information to consultants, developers, contractors, and citizens as appropriate.
- Provides written or electronic responses to utility location requests through the Sunshine State One-Call of Florida system.
- Furnishes sewer lateral locations and other records to citizens, engineers, architects, builders, etc.
- Provides field locations in response to utility location requests through the Sunshine State One-Call of Florida system or other entities.
- Delineates existing utilities on base plans provided by governmental entities or private consultants.
- Coordinates with Engineering Inspector, Utility Supervisors and other City staff to identify and document existing utility information.
- Collects and documents field data on location, depth, material and size of existing utilities.
- Other duties, responsibilities, and activities may change or be assigned at any time with or without notice.
- Associate’s Degree in Construction Management or related discipline.
- Three (3) years of experience as a utility locator technician or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
- Must possess and maintain a valid state driver’s license with an acceptable driving history.
- Knowledge of the materials, practices and methods in construction of water, sanitary sewer and storm drain systems.
- Knowledge of the procedures and requirements of the Sunshine State One-Call of Florida system.
- Skill in prioritizing work assignments.
- Basic computer, AutoCAD, ArcView, and topographic survey skills.
- Ability to work independently.
- Ability to take oral and/or written instructions.
- Ability to read and interpret construction drawings.
- Ability to use metal detector and magnetic pipeline locating equipment.
- Ability to advise City personnel about work and make sound judgement calls.
- Ability to establish and maintain good working relationships with other City employees, contractors, and the public.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Physical demands refer to the requirements for physical exertion and coordination of limb and body movement.
- Performs light to medium work that involves walking or standing virtually all of the time and also involves exerting between 20 and 50 pounds of force on a regular and recurring basis or considerable skill, adeptness and speed in the use of the fingers, hands or limbs in tasks involving close tolerances or limits of accuracy.

- Involves routine and frequent exposure to:
- Bright/dim light; Dusts and pollen.
- Extreme heat and/or cold; Wet or humid conditions.
