General Purpose
Enforces City animal control ordinances, picks up live and dead animals to keep City free of road hazards and stray animals.

Supervision Received
Works under the supervision of the Animal Control Supervisor.

NoneEssential Duties and Responsibilities
Interacting with the public during calls for service, adoptions and routine shelter visits.  Respond to citizen calls to: pick up strays, dangerous or dead animals, including domestic animals, livestock, snakes and other wild animals.  Investigate bites and confiscate the animal if necessary.  Remove dead animals from the road, pick up live or dead animals in any situation warranting removal of an animal using catch pole or leash.
Enforce the animal control ordinances by investigating bites, informing citizens of laws, appearing in court on behalf of the city, logging all calls and activities, and writing reports.
Work in the Animal Shelter to take calls, feed and water the animals, clean facility including cages and euthanize animals when necessary.
Perform duties assigned to them by the Community Services Lieutenant and/or Animal Control Supervisor.
 
Peripheral Duties
Assist the Police and/or Fire Departments in the removal of live animals in emergency situations or the removal of dead animals as a result of fire.  Also, transport animal’s heads to lab for rabies testing.
Promptly document and submit required reports as a part of any investigation or assignment.
Remain alert of conditions affecting safety and use of roadways.
Take necessary follow-up action regarding investigations, citizen complaints, and complete the reports.Desired Minimum Qualifications:
Applicant must pass a background investigation; Character and reputation must be of the highest order; Applicant must have proof of liability insurance; a valid driver’s license not in jeopardy of suspension; Overall driving record must reflect a history of prudence and maturity.
Must not have any convictions for Class B misdemeanors or higher, retroactive for 10 years.
Must not have any felony convictions, or convictions for driving while intoxicated/under the influence of drugs, assault involving family violence, or any crime involving moral turpitude.

Education and Experience:
High school diploma or GED. 
Preferred, but not required: one-year job related experience.

Necessary Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Knowledge of euthanasia, tranquilizer and other chemicals used.  Also, ability to complete analysis reports.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit and talk or listen.  The employee is occasionally required to stand; walk; use hands to find, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; and taste or smell.
Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

Work Environment:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee typically works a 40-hour week in an Animal Shelter environment.  The employee’s work schedule includes working weekends and occasional holidays. Employee may be required to perform dangerous and stressful work at any time and in any type of terrain. The employee occasionally works in high, confined or otherwise precarious places; and is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, extreme cold, extreme heat, and vibration.  
The noise level in the work environment is moderate to loud in the Shelter.
