Part-Time Custodian (DPW)

Position Summary
The City of Dearborn Heights Department of Public Works is seeking a dependable and hardworking Part-Time Custodian to help maintain clean, safe, and welcoming municipal facilities. This role is essential in supporting daily operations by ensuring DPW offices, locker rooms, restrooms, and building maintenance areas remain orderly and well-maintained.

Employees of the City are expected to serve residents and internal customers in a professional, courteous, and respectful manner while maintaining strong working relationships with coworkers, supervisors, elected officials, and the public.

Work Schedule and Pay
• Schedule: Monday through Thursday
• Hours: 5:00 PM – 9:00 PM (20 hours per week)
• Starting Pay: $17.00 per hour
• Performance-Based Increase: Opportunity to increase to $18.00 per hour based on performance and reliability

Key Responsibilities
• Sweep, mop, and maintain floors in offices, hallways, locker rooms, and maintenance areas
• Vacuum carpeted areas regularly
• Clean and sanitize restroom facilities
• Remove trash and transport to designated receptacles daily
• Maintain supply levels for restrooms and kitchen areas
• Maintain light fixtures and replace bulbs as needed
• Wash entryway windows and maintain general building cleanliness
• Strip and wax floors on a scheduled basis
• Assist with snow and debris removal from sidewalks and entryways
• Set up and take down tables, chairs, and equipment for meetings or events
• Maintain building security by ensuring doors and windows are properly secured
• Notify supervisor of repair needs, safety concerns, or equipment malfunctions
• Perform additional related duties as assigned

Qualifications and Physical Requirements

• Must be at least 18 years of age
• High school diploma or equivalent required
• Demonstrated reliability, punctuality, and ability to complete assigned tasks independently
• Ability to understand and follow written and verbal instructions, work schedules, and basic diagrams
• Ability to read work procedures and communicate effectively with supervisors, coworkers, and the public
• Basic math skills required for measuring, supply tracking, and task completion
• Ability to work cooperatively in a team environment and adapt to changing priorities
• Customer service mindset with the ability to interact professionally and respectfully

Physical and Environmental Requirements

• Ability to perform medium physical work, including lifting up to 50 pounds occasionally and up to 25 pounds frequently
• Ability to perform repetitive movements such as bending, reaching, handling equipment, and standing or walking for extended periods
• Ability to work in indoor and outdoor environments and tolerate varying weather and noise conditions
• Sufficient visual and hearing ability to perform cleaning duties safely and maintain awareness of surroundings
