Job Summary:
The Heavy Equipment Operator performs duties related to the operation of heavy equipment in the construction, repair, and maintenance of the City’s streetS, alleys, and drainage ditches.
Specific Duties:
- Operates light to heavy complex equipment in support of a variety of maintenance and construction operations of streets and drainages.
- Operates various types of trucks in the hauling and distribution of materials
- Identifies equipment needs for each assigned project
- Picks up and delivers heavy equipment from construction sites
- Cleans and performs preventive maintenance on heavy and light equipment
- Setup and takedown traffic warning devices and barricades for traffic control in accordance with MUTCD
- Directs and controls traffic around work sites
- Waters street and flushes drain
- Grades and crowns City streets, roads and alleys using a motor grader
- Maintains asphalt and concrete roadways and surfaces
- Maintains medians and right of ways for the City of Dayton
- Loads trucks with heavy machinery, mineral aggregates, bulky trash, pipes, and other material or debris
- Shovels dirt, asphalt, trash and debris
- Cleans debris from ditches, culverts, and creek beds
- Bulldozes land as required
- Collects and hauls trash, garbage, debris, dirt, sand, and gravel
- Reads grades and slopes stakes in leveling, surfacing, and rolling roads
- Responds to emergency call-out
- Performs other duties as required
- Assist other departments as necessary
Essential Functions:
- Ability to effectively communicate in oral and written communications
- Ability to operate a commercial telephone and a two-way radio
- Ability to operate a variety of moderate to heavy power driven equipment
- Ability to read and interpret maps, sketches, drawings, specifications and technical manuals
- Ability to perform duties for extended periods of time in extreme weather
- Ability to maintain a physical condition appropriate to the performance of assigned duties and responsibilities which may include walking, standing, bending or sitting for extended periods of time
- Ability to maintain effective audio-visual discrimination and perception needed for making observations, communicating with others and operating assigned equipment and vehicles
- Ability to lift, carry, push, or pull moderately heavy objects and materials up to 100 pounds
Required Education, Degrees, Certificates, and/or Licenses:
- High school diploma or GED
- Two years of increasingly responsible experience performing maintenance work involving the skilled operations of heavy construction and maintenance
- Valid Class B or higher Texas Driver’s License, or
- Obtain a Class B or higher Texas Driver’s License within 6 months of employment
